HERE'S A STORY THAT SHOULD ENCOURAGE OLDER BEGINNERS

I have a student, 67, has had 2 strokes and a heart condition.

Says he doesn't feel as mentally sharp as he used to be.

Been playing for 30+ years, has all of his open string chords down and a couple of bar chords.

Self taught, sings and plays.

He comes in for his 1st lesson and I suggest to him that he could expand his repertoire by learning his bar chords in a systematic way and then apply them to some selected tunes to work them in.

I get him to learn a couple of new shapes...then we go to apply them to some backings I've made.

ABSOLUTE TRAIN WRECK

Not only can he not lock on time wise....he can't hear that he is several bars behind or ahead of the backing.

Turns out that has has never ever played along with a tune or backing.

So I asked him did he want to fix this...and he said yes.

So I started him on the 1st page of my beginners method which has backings for the most simple of one chord exercises.

I got him to tap his foot, count out loud, play simple quarter note strums, then eventually 8th note strums.

I gave him listening exercises to teach him about drum beats, and how to listen for the Bass to hear a change in chords, taught him to follow basic sheet music and chord charts.

3 MONTHS OF HARD DETERMINED WORK AND HE NAILED IT

THE POINT OF THIS STORY IS TO HIGHLIGHT THE FACT THAT THE BRAIN IS PLASTIC

AT ANY AGE....AND CAN UNDO BAD HABITS AND LEARN NEW GOOD ONES.

SO YOU ARE NEVER TO OLD.......BUT IF YOU HAVE A LIFE TIME OF BAD HABITS IT DOES TAKE SOME SERIOUS WORK TO CORRECT THEM.

To add to this Steve attends some folk/Irish jams and in 2 years has gone from the guy in the corner that everybody ignored....to being the guy that everybody is saying “whats that you're playing”

He's also mastered transposition.......so if someone at the jam night wants to try a new key, it's no problem...he just plays it in bar chords almost on the fly.
