Live4Life Celebrations!
Earlier this year all Year 8 students participated in Youth Mental Health First Aid, today students "Checked in" with what they had learnt during a session of fun activities, food and music led by our Live4Life Crew.

Our talented teams are preparing to write and illustrate their books, all while raising funds for childhood cancer research through The Kids' Cancer Project.

🎉A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to the students of the School for Student Leadership Gnurad Gundidj Campus for your all your hard work today. The students worked tirelessly in Deadman’s Gully, the Boomerang and Above the Walking track areas removing and relocating tree guards in preparation for our annual planting day on Sunday 30th August. (Go the Green Ninjas 🥷😉)

Arts/Technology Week – What a Week!
Today marked the final day of an incredible week celebrating Arts and Technology at LSC!

Our guest speaker Nerissa Box shared her fascinating career journey, from working on Star Wars and building Darth Vader’s muscle suit to her work with Creature Technology Company on Walking with Dinosaurs, How to Train Your Dragon and creatures for Universal Studios. Students loved hearing how sculpting, textiles, 3D printing, engineering and animatronics all come together, along with a few great stories about Ewan McGregor and Nerissa’s soft spot for Toothless!

Friday also saw students exploring tattoo and skin art with our own Mark Grimley, learning about design, symbolism and adapting artwork to the human form.

A huge thank you to Nerissa and Mark, and to everyone who contributed to an amazing week of creativity and hands-on experiences, hopefully inspiring our students to explore the many exciting careers and pathways available in Arts and Technology.

Arts/ Technology Week
What a fabulous day at Latrobe Regional Gallery! Our Year 11 Art Making and Exhibiting students travelled by bus to Morwell to view Michele Beevors’ Anatomy Lessons exhibition. The exhibition provided an outstanding example of a professionally curated exhibition and directly supported SAC 1 – Thematic Exhibition Proposal. Students had the opportunity to analyse how curatorial decisions, including exhibition layout, lighting, display methods and atmosphere, communicated a strong theme and engaged audiences.
On the way home, we stopped in Yinnar to explore the public sculptures displayed throughout the main street as part of the Gippsland Sculpture Exhibition. Students were able to experience both large and small-scale sculptural works in a public setting and consider how artworks can transform everyday community spaces into an outdoor gallery. The biennial exhibition is supported by families and community groups, with proceeds and sponsorship contributions helping fund acquisitions that become part of Yinnar’s permanent public sculpture collection. We will definitely be marking the next Gippsland Sculpture Exhibition on the calendar for 2027!

Featuring LSC Year 11 student Tallarah and Year 10 student Nico. "We Fight Fires" is an episode of the BBC children's documentary series My Life (available on the BBC iPlayer Channel) featuring members of the local Meeniyan-Stony Creek CFA Fire Brigade. The inspiring episode follows young people as they train and learn what it takes to battle dangerous bushfires.

Congratulations to Nico and Tallarah on this exciting achievement!

Some Meeniyan-Stony Creek CFA Fire Brigade members were recently involved in a BBC 'My Life' documentary that aired last week in the UK.
On Saturday, August 29, Meeniyan-Stony Creek CFA Fire Brigade will have a local screening at the station at 11am.

Congratulations to LSC Year 11 student Lucas who has signed into a School-Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship (SBAT) with the support of Head Start.

Lucas will be undertaking Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade, while working with Altec Australia, and continuing his school studies part-time. Head Start & Leongatha Secondary College wish Lucas all the best as he gets his career off to a “Head Start”!

Arts/Technology Week Day 3

We welcomed Craig Anderson as a presenter for Arts/Technology Week. Craig is a South Gippsland photographer whose work spans breathtaking landscapes, captivating night photography and, more recently, compelling street portraiture.

Alongside his passion for photography, Craig is also a teacher at Leongatha Secondary College, where he generously shares his knowledge and expertise with students. With years of experience behind the camera and a deep understanding of both the creative and technical aspects of photography, Craig inspired students by sharing his creative journey and the many opportunities that photography can offer.

Students explored a diverse range of photographic experiences, including street photography, model shoots and Craig’s involvement in whale watching and photography for scientific research tracking whale migration. Craig explained how individual whales can be identified by the unique markings on their tails, much like a fingerprint.

His presentations provided students with an insight into the many pathways photography can lead to and demonstrated how a passion for photography can connect creativity, technology, science and real-world opportunities. Students went out to practice photos using leading lines, which are included in the photos below.

In the afternoon, our Year 11 Art Making and Exhibiting students were inspired by Gippsland local artist Libby Witchell, an established Australian landscape, animal and still life artist, educator and exhibition curator based in Traralgon.

Libby shared her creative journey with students, including a children’s book she has illustrated and her sketchbook, giving students an insight into how ideas develop from initial concepts through to finished artworks. She also brought along original paintings for students to analyse, encouraging them to consider the meaning, messages, themes and aesthetic qualities within the works before hearing Libby’s own perspective and intentions as the artist.

A strong theme within her work explored the changing Gippsland landscape and the impact of urban development, particularly the loss of farmland to expanding housing estates around Traralgon. Libby shared her personal connection to this issue, explaining how the urban sprawl has reached the doorstep of the picturesque farm where she currently lives. Her work raises important questions about the changing landscape, the loss of agricultural land and what happens to the animals that depend on it.
