Old Yanconians' Union Inc This page aims to keep current and former students and teachers of Yanco Agricultural High School, informed about reunion organisation and memberships.

Several thousand past students, teachers and hostel staff have passed through YAHS since it was opened in 1922. The Old Yanconians' Union, founded in 1929 in Sydney and comprising former students living and attending Hawkesbury Agricultural College or Sydney University and headed up by former principal, Ernest Breakwell, strove to keep those students actively interested and involved in their 'old

school'. Almost a century later, this involvement is a primary aim of the Old Yanconians' Union: active and financial involvement through working bees, the funding of specific projects, Gala Day, representation and support for the school. The OYU seeks to contribute to school life in such a way that benefits current and future generations of students. Recent projects include: school War Memorial, removal of old gas boiler, provision of barbecue unit and front lawn seating, financing part of front ovals irrigation system and provision of exercise stations around the Giltinan Sports Hall.

YAHS has asked us to circulate a document from NSW Infrastructure regarding the new girls' dormitories planned for Yanco Ag. There is a link to a short survey on the second page. Please feel free to respond to it.

NSW Department of Education – School Infrastructure

Investing in our schools
The NSW Government is investing $7.9 billion over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver 215 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.
The NSW Department of Education is committed to delivering new and upgraded schools for communities across NSW. The delivery of these important projects is essential to the future learning needs of our students and supports growth in the local economy.

Project overview
We are undertaking planning for an upgrade of the boarding accommodation at Yanco Agricultural High School. The proposed upgrade involves the construction of new accommodation facilities and the improvements to existing buildings.
The project aims to deliver enhanced learning outcomes for students through improved accommodation with:
• the removal of the temporary female dormitories,
• the construction of a new permanent female boarding facility, and
• the partial refurbishment of existing permanent boarding facilities to make them fit for purpose and efficient.

Progress summary
The NSW 2021/22 Budget committed funding to deliver the boarding upgrade at Yanco Agricultural High School. Early planning is now complete and a business case has been submitted to NSW Treasury for consideration. The project team will continue developing the design and documentation to lodge the relevant planning approvals.

The procurement of a project team including project managers, architects, and traffic and transport planners is underway to enable the continued development of plans for the project.

Project update | November 2021

| NSW Department of Education – School Infrastructure Next steps

A Project Reference Group (PRG) will be established to progress the project and provide input into the next phase of design. This involves consultation with the school leadership and key Education stakeholders before sharing more information with students and the community.

We look forward to holding an information session at Yanco Agricultural High School in 2022 to share the latest design and seek feedback.

Relevant planning approval will be lodged, and tendering for a contractor is needed in order to progress to construction of the project. We will continue to share project updates and information throughout the planning and construction phase of the new facilities.

How can I get involved?
We are committed to working together with our school communities and other stakeholders to deliver the best possible facilities for students. Your feedback on this project is important to us.
We are interested in hearing what the upgrades would mean to students and staff of Yanco Agricultural High School. You can respond to this short online survey to share your thoughts:

The website:
www.schoolinfrastructure.nsw.gov.au has some details of the project and provides a chance for feedback.

We’re committed to providing the best learning environments at public schools across NSW to prepare young people with the skills and learning they need to succeed.

YAHS Centenary

In 2022 Yanco Agricultural High School will celebrate it's 100th year.

The establishment of a residential State High School at Yanco in 1922 on Samuel McCaughey's North Yanco station was the product of several important developments in NSW education and agriculture.

We are seeking Yanconians memories of their time at Yanco Agricultural High School as well as any expertise they are willing to share with the current school community.

OLD YANCONIANS' UNION ANNUAL REUNION CELEBRATING THE YAHS CENTENARY, 2022

Our Eventbrite booking system for next year's reunion is now live. You can search Eventbrite or use the following link to make your bookings.

As previously advertised, the event is booked into the Yoogali Club at Griffith on 11th March 2022, starting from 6.30pm. We suggest you consider accommodation in Griffith on the Friday night or car-pooling from Leeton with others in your year group.

Bookings MUST be made through Eventbrite. You must pay for your booking IN ADVANCE of attendance so we know exactly how many people are planning to attend and so we can cater accordingly.

There will be a small booking fee in addition to the door charge for the night.

We are NOT planning to collect any door charges on the night as catering numbers will have closed with the Yoogali Club before then.

There is provision for a refund of your door charge should your circumstances change closer to the reunion. However, your service fee cannot be returned.

Hoping to see you in Griffith in 2022 at the start of a big weekend!

Join hundreds of Old Yanconians at a reunion dinner, as they celebrate the centenary of Yanco Agricultural High School on 11th March 2022.

2022 Centenary Reunion:

We are expecting a large number of Old Yanconians to make the trip back for the school's centenary in March 2022. The OYU has decided to move the reunion dinner to the Yoogali Club (Griffith) on Friday evening, 11th March 2022. The Yoogali Club can currently (under covid restrictions) seat about 750 people.

Bookings must be made online, through Eventbrite, and paid for in advance of attendance. It is highly unlikely that any ticket sales will be possible at the door as firm catering numbers will be required in advance of the function. The cost will be $60 and a small booking fee will apply. Arrangements with Eventbrite will go live online in another month or so.

If you are planning to travel by yourself, you may like to consider arranging Friday night accommodation in Griffith. If you are attending as part of a class reunion group which is staying in Leeton, you might consider car-pooling with your group.

Recent advice from the school suggests the following activities are being planned for the centenary:

Thursday 10/3/22
afternoon/evening - Art Show opening at YAHS

Friday 11/3/22 - Annual Beach Carnival, probably 9am to
3pm at Middle Beach near the school.

Friday evening - Old Yanconians' reunion - Yoogali Club,
11/3/22 Griffith

Saturday 12/3/22 - Gala day

Saturday evening - Fireworks over the school lake

Saturday evening - By invitation only, centenary dinner at YAHS
(no further details available)

The OYU will update further arrangements for the reunion and school plans for the centenary on this page, as they come to hand.

FINAL REQUEST FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
Yanco Agricultural High Centenary Booklet
As part of the school centenary celebrations in 2022, the school is planning to publish a commemorative book, bringing together, school history and the individual experiences of students and staff over the decades since 1922.
We hope you will contribute to this project.
We need your name and years at YAHS. The following is a list of prompts you can use in putting together your thoughts about your Yanco Ag experience. They are not exhaustive points and you can refer to some or all of them. You may refer to other matters and developments, too. You may write as much or as little as you wish.
We may edit your comments and use all, part or none of them in the final published book. We will also need your permission to incorporate any comments we do use within the book.
A. Name: ……………………………………
B. Years at YAHS: ……………. to …………….
1. Particular memories you have of school life, your studies, extracurricular activities, sporting experiences, times “out bush”, the community of students at YAHS, important experiences for you, during your years at Yanco.
2. Who and why YAHS was chosen? Was it your choice or your parents or . . .?
3. What you liked and/or disliked about your experiences as a student at YAHS.
4. Any particularly vivid events, pranks, memories or experiences you recall.
5. Any unforgettable people (students / staff) you remember and why.
6. What you gained from attending YAHS; and how you contributed to life at the Ag.
7. Any other matters, issues or things you’d like to include.
We would also appreciate a single paragraph ‘biography’ about you; outlining what you’ve done since leaving YAHS. We’d like to include this within the book and most likely, near your contributed comments, so that readers can see the wide diversity of career directions Yanconians have followed after leaving high school.
At the end of your writing, would you include words to the effect of:
"I give my permission for Yanco Agricultural High School to use part or all of my written contributions in a published commemorative book which will be put on sale."
We’d like your written contribution in a Word document, if possible, to make editing quicker and easier for us.
If you don’t have access to a computer, Microsoft Word and prefer to write by hand, this is also acceptable.
Your contributions are needed by: 31 March 2021.
