✨ Djinda Kaatijin, performed by Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, has connected students across Western Australia through the power of storytelling, culture and learning.

📊 Together we reached:
✅ 30 partner schools
✅ 60 SIDE Primary students, including students joining us from Indonesia, Pakistan, South Korea, Thailand and China
✅ Approximately 1,100 students
✅ Around 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

A huge thank you to Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company for delivering such a meaningful and engaging performance, creating opportunities for students to connect with Aboriginal culture, language and stories.

If you’re eligible, you could receive:
$150 for each kindy and primary school student
$250 for each secondary school student.

This payment can help with school costs like uniforms, books, excursions and other school expenses.

This NAIDOC Week, we celebrate 50 Years of Deadly - honouring five decades of recognising and celebrating the strength, resilience, achievements and enduring cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 2026 National NAIDOC Week poster, Paralpi, created by proud Yankunytjatjara artist Zaachariaha Fielding, reflects the deep connection between Country, culture and community, while celebrating the stories that continue to inspire future generations.

At SIDE, we acknowledge the rich knowledge, languages and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across Western Australia. Together, we continue to learn, listen and walk alongside First Nations communities with respect, curiosity and a shared commitment to reconciliation.

📢 Staff Development Day Notice – Friday 8 May

The School of Isolated and Distance Education will be holding a Term 2 Staff Development Day on Friday 8 May.
👉 All regular Webex lessons will be suspended for the day.
👉 Partner schools and home-based supervisors will need to make alternative arrangements for students.
👉 Students will still have full access to Moodle courses.

Since the first Anzac Day commemorations on 25 April 1916, Australians have paused to recognise and honour the service and sacrifices for veterans and families. It is not a celebration of war, but a solemn day of remembrance for the more than 103,000 Australians who have lost their lives, while also acknowledging the significant toll of disease endured during the Gallipoli campaign.

Often overlooked in Australia, frontier violence is rarely recognised as war, reflecting a broader denial of the nation’s full history. During the First World War, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples faced exclusion under discriminatory laws, yet many still served some by concealing their identities.

It’s estimated over 1,000 First Nations people enlisted, fighting for a country that denied them citizenship, equal rights, and recognition. Many returned to ongoing discrimination, with some denied benefits, land, and even access to their own families.

Their service and sacrifice deserve acknowledgement alongside the truth of Australia’s history.
