“I need space.”
When children have emotional outbursts, are they really just “misbehaving”?
Or could it be that they simply haven’t learned how to ask for the space they need to calm down?
“I need space.”
This simple phrase is something I often teach young children to use.
According to child development, children between ages 3 to 6 are still largely led by their emotional brain. When they feel overwhelmed, angry, frustrated, or out of control, it’s often not intentional—they simply may not yet have the ability to regulate themselves immediately.
But here’s the interesting part:
When children learn to say, “I need space,” and the adults around them genuinely respect that need, it can often be far more effective than repeated correction or reasoning.
In my classroom, I guide children to understand that when they feel unable to manage their emotions, they can confidently express:
“I need space.”
And when they do, both adults and peers are encouraged to respect that boundary and allow them the time they need.
This process is about much more than calming down.
It helps children build:
✨ Self-awareness
✨ Emotional regulation
✨ Self-advocacy
Sometimes, what truly supports a child’s growth isn’t immediate correction—
It’s giving them the experience of feeling understood, respected, and safe.
Parents can absolutely try introducing this phrase at home too.
It may just become your family’s own magic word.
You might be surprised how much more easily children regulate when they feel respected.
Does your family have its own “magic word”?
