I don't have a pic of a Leo this year to celebrate the festive season.
Sadly, the world remains a mess, tens of thousands dying in unending wars all over.
I reckon my now 17 year old rescue cat from hell sums these conflicts very well:
The kitchen paper roll didn't stand a chance and was swiftly dealt with. Gryze was victorious!
Let us all band together, support Ukraine, support all the kitchen paper rolls and just do unto others as we would have them do unto us.

I should like to thank all the many people who took the time to reply so kindly to my last post.
Many have asked how they could help resurrect ileo and ever since I took the International Leonberger Database offline 2 years ago I have explained how difficult it can be in terms of cost, IT expertise and online server management.
Ileo had a fantastic young programmer back in 2005 who didn't even own a Leonberger let alone any interest in single breed databases.
Nobody can work for free especially when one has a new family of their own to support and over the years as new health tests and more data needed to added, therefore more online fields and search options added etc, the database became ever more outdated. Technology methods move fast and ileo couldn't keep up. More and more errors started to occur online (backhand issue if you understand IT speak)
So here is my offer to ALL Leo owners, breeders and pet owners alike and all you need is Breedmate Pedigree Database programme.
Wanda Oud is setting up a Dropbox account to which I shall upload the full International Leonberger Database as of 2 years ago which includes all the data and photos I collected for over 20 years.
I am offering all my work for free to anyone who wants it, although it is my sincere wish that a new team of enthusiastic, motivated young people who don't feel restricted by out dated club rules, out dated FCI and all registering bodies around the world even the ILU, who will continue exposing Matador Stud Dogs, who will continue with the Longevity Project and hopefully engaging a research institute or university to undertake a real population genetics study, who will continue to expose fake pedigree, who will continue to try to fill in the blank pedigrees of "Titre Initial" whether or not the dogs were registered because SOMEBODY KNOWS their names and blank pedigrees are very, very bad.
All of that will take money to do. But little steps, eh?
I am going to quit FB altogether in the next couple of days, so this page will be gone but please do contact me via email, [email protected] or you can leave a message on Skype (look for either said email or Karen Hindson) I don't answer any FB messages.
Do share and get the ball rolling for a new International Leonberger Database!

Swan Song for International Leonberger Database and my last ever Leonberger.
Two weeks ago on 21st December 2022 I gave a final hug to Impi, Ursiform Impi Dragon Warrior. He was indeed a warrior of the most noble of dogs. He was kind, gentle, tolerant, fun loving, mischievous, the only friend I had left.
This is the last photo I have of him, taken just after a biopsy was done that revealed a very aggressive mast cell tumour. He was only 8 years 8 months old, the shortest life of all my Leos.
My long journey, starting in the mid 1970s with Leonbergers has ended and clearly so has this database as all efforts to revive and put back online have failed.
Wishing you all and your Leonbergers the very best for 2023 and the years to come and thank you for all the support over so many years!

Here's a fun thing you can do to help Cap'n Kori become knighted by the one and only Cap'n Jack Sparrow himself! And it won't cost you as much as a farthing. Kori needs 200k subscribers on his new YouTube channel to achieve his special knighthood
Back story, if you don't already know: Kori is a very brave young boy who has had 2 heart transplants and sadly is now in palliative care.
On his bucket list was to meet Johnny Depp and have his brand new channel reach 100k subs. Johnny Depp responded immediately and spread the word.
The internet can make a child's dream come true!

Just to let you know that my wonderful daughter has gifted me a new computer just a couple of days ago.
I have not yet tried to install the now at least 3 year out of date database and despite enthusiastic offers of help to get the International Leonberger Database back online, the cost and lack of expertise proved to be too great.
Now that I have a new computer, I am more than willing to gather the data that Leonberger owners and breeders want to see, warts and all!

Leos in Russia.
I recently asked about the fate of Leonbergers in Ukraine and there was a small response.
How are the Leos and their owners faring in Russia?
Leonbergers have been in Russia for a very long time, rumored /reported that that Nicolas II, the last Czar imported many from Germany.
Of course none of this can be verified but we do have a photo of an early Leo in Russia.
My computer is dead and sorry I can't remember the source.
Please let this horrible, pointless war end.

I received the following message from Valentina Margonari who lives in Italy yesterday.
I have no connection with this person and I left out her contact details that were also provided:

"Hi everybody from Italy. If you know there is in Ukraine one (male) or two (both male, or a male and a female) Leonberger puppy looking for a home, please write to me. I know and love this breed and as they are giants it might be hard for them to find a loving family. I’m looking for puppy because will be easier to insert with my other dogs. I’m president of an association in Italy that deals with disabled animals. I was fortunate enough to adopt two young Leonbergers, whom the family no longer wanted. Unfortunately, yes they got cancer, both because of the fact there were children of brothers. They died at 2 and a half years. I had previously had another leo, died at 2 years because of the LPN1
Now Now I wish I could help others. They would live in the house with us (my husband an me), we have a country house in northern Italy with a garden of 2500 square meters and a large swimming pool. I am available for any questions and thank you very much.

Leonbergers in Ukraine.
It has been a most horrific few weeks for the people in Ukraine.
Everyone around the world except the people of Russia have seen the heart breaking scenes of families either trying to escape or sheltering somewhere underground with their beloved cats and dogs with them. The death and destruction is incomprehensible.
The FCI convened a special meeting just a few days after Russia invaded Ukraine and set up a means for people to donate to Ukrainian Breeders etc.
Of all the people I have seen displaced with their pets, none have been large dogs let alone Leonbergers
Since my computer died I can't even access what little data the International Leonberger database had about Ukraine but one breeder's name springs to mind, Olga Zamurueva.
Is there anyone out there who knows about what is happening to Leos and their owners in Ukraine?

What do you think of Norway's decision to ban the breeding of British Bull Dogs and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels?
And here is Dogs Australia's (ANKC) response which, in a nutshell, says that this is a bad idea, Australia has a huge gene pool of both breeds, nothing to see here! Yeah right!

https://dogsvictoria.org.au/uploads/Dogs%20Australia%20Statement%20on%20Norwegian%20Govt%20Breed%20Bans%205%20Feb%20PDF%20.pdf

Norway banned breeding English Bulldogs and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels because their court ruled it to be cruel due to their severe health problems characteristic to their breeds.

It has always been very hard and expensive to import domestic animals, particularly dogs and cats. Even for race horses (extremely expensive also but different rules also applied. They were able to run and often win in the Melbourne Cup for example.)
Back when I was trying to import a dog in the 1970's the overall quarantine time was 9 months in a kennel, part of that time in Hawaii and then 4 months in another quarantine kennel in Australia.
Eventually over many years, the quarantine time became less and less although the cost did not. No longer were we able to provide food or even visit our pets.
But just 10 days quarantine looks good, right? WRONG!
There has been a huge problem with quarantine kennels for many years and the latest suggests that very many pets are dying soon after arrival in Melbourne's quarantine kennel which is the only one operating for the entire country. So the petition says.
I have not done the research and as yet I have not signed the petition. So I would be interested to hear if anybody has recent experiences.
Quote:
The Department of Agriculture has recently acknowledged that increasing numbers of pets are dying at their government run PEQ (Post Entry Quarantine) facility which is located in Mickleham, Victoria.

This Australian tax payer funded facility is the only one in the entire country and houses tens of thousands of pets arriving into Australia every year for their mandatory 10 day quarantine period.
How many pets are losing their lives while undergoing quarantine? It is unknown as PEQ are protected from the Australian Freedom of Information Act 1982. However, we can’t help but wonder how many deaths could have been preventable, had the right level of care and procedures been put into place.

The Department has failed in their duty of care and responsibility to the Australian public by not providing veterinarian care facilities required to keep pets healthy during their time in PEQ.

Unfortunately, this immoral oversight, can quickly turn into a cruel nightmare for pets and their owners. In addition, a deceased pet cannot be released to the grieving family and PEQ are unable to provide cremation services and release the ashes to their distraught owner.
