🫶📚 LITERACY IS A FOUNDATION FOR A LIFETIME 🚀🦄
At Rosie’s Reading, our part starts at birth with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library being the heartbeat of what we do.
Today marks the 60th International Literacy Day.
UNESCO describes literacy as a fundamental human right and a foundation through which people acquire broader knowledge, skills, values and attitudes.
It’s an important reminder that literacy is bigger than reading in itself, but reading and sharing stories in the early years help lay important foundations for language, vocabulary, comprehension, communication and learning.
So in Tasmania, we are growing as our funding allows us to sustainably deliver the program, but in our hearts we want every little Tasmanian to start yesterday.
Through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Australia, Rosie’s Reading is focused on getting books in to the hands of every child in every home as close to birth as possible, with a new, age-appropriate book delivered to their mailbox every month until they turn five. That's up to 60 books that become their very own home library.
Of course, a baby isn't able to read yet.
But from the very beginning, books create opportunities to listen, talk, connect, touch, wonder and share. These things underpin the reading and literacy journey for life and expand in to problem solving, critical thinking, consequences, financial literacy, health literacy and beyond.
By the time a child reaches their first day of school, thousands of days of brain development have already passed. If a child starts Imagination Library from birth, our evaluations indicate they will have had around 1200 shared reading moments in the home. That's a great foundation for starting school.
Literacy matters for a lifetime and the foundations of that shouldn't wait for the classroom.
