⚓ Boating safety tip: Safe anchoring ⚓
One of the best things about boating in Tasmania is finding a sheltered, quiet bay to drop anchor and getting away from it all.
To make the most of these spots, it is essential that boaters can confidently anchor their boats safely.
⚠ Before dropping the anchor, make sure you:
✅Choose the right spot - avoid seaweed, other vessels, and busy areas.
✅Use the correct amount of rope/chain - allow enough length for at least 3 times the depth of the water.
✅Secure your anchor - once it’s at the bottom, gently reverse your vessel to secure your anchor
✅Check the location – make note of landmarks to make sure you’re not drifting, and if possible, use digital navigation tools to mark your latitude and longitude.
✅Be prepared – act immediately. If boats are not anchored securely, they may collide with other vessels, drift onto rocks or damage the natural environment as well as your vessel.
Anchoring safely protects you, your boat, and Tasmania’s unique marine environment.
