NEW RESOURCE YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS
Students learn that subordinating connectives are the "glue" that joins a dependent clause to an independent clause, helping writers explain when, why, how, where, or under what conditions something happens. As students expand their repertoire of connectives, they begin to create longer, more detailed sentences that improve sentence flow, strengthen their voice, and add depth to their writing.
Help your students move beyond simple sentences and develop more sophisticated, fluent writing with this Subordinating Connectives Mat & Explainer Pack.
Designed to support whole-school writing development, this resource introduces subordinating connectives in a carefully sequenced progression, allowing students to build confidence with simple sentence structures before experimenting with more mature and sophisticated writing choices.

Perfect for use alongside Big Write and VCOP, this resource helps students understand that connectives are not simply grammar terms to memorise—they are powerful writing tools that improve the quality, sophistication, and fluency of their writing.

Free Download - Flip It Challenge Cards
Designed to support the Openers and Connectives elements of VCOP, these quick challenges encourage students to manipulate sentence structure by moving the dependent clause to the beginning of the sentence. As they "flip" sentences, students learn how authors vary sentence patterns, create more engaging openers, and improve the flow of their writing.

NEW RESOURCE – NOW AVAILABLE
I’m really excited to share this one.
The VCOP Daily Review Bookmarks (F–2) are now live on the VCOP website.
This has come from a really common challenge I see in classrooms:
Students are reading every day… but we’re not always seeing that transfer into their writing.
This resource fixes that.
It turns everyday reading into a structured opportunity for students to notice, talk about, and then apply VCOP in context.
Students:
Hunt for vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation in real texts
Talk about what they notice
Then use one idea in their own writing
It’s simple, but it’s powerful.
There are three levels included, so you can easily differentiate across your class without extra planning.
Perfect for:
Independent reading
Guided reading
Writing warm-ups
Quick daily review
This is one of those small routines that, done consistently, leads to real improvement in writing.
Now available on the VCOP website.

I love Hillary’s ‘Play-Doh Punctuation activity’, I just would need green play-doh to match VCOP colours.
Mixing fine motor skills, hand manipulation and literacy is always a winner.

More “Play-Doh Punctuation” fun! (Totally just made that name up. 🤣) The kids *really* love this activity! If you know me, I try to incorporate my love for Play-Doh into little things here or there. Some activities work great, some are meh. This one…hits every time!
