Once again, Owen C. Y11 has absolutely smashed it at the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships, returning from Mt Buller as a dual Victorian champion.
Adding to an already impressive cabinet of silverware, Owen dominated the Division 1 Boys Alpine Giant Slalom, winning by almost a full second, before comfortably beating a strong field of Melbourne school competitors to also benamed Division 1 Boys Ski Cross Champion.
Owen’s speed and skill on the mountain are seriously impressive, but it’s his calm, kind and humble nature that makes these achievements even more special.
Next stop: the Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships at Perisher in three weeks!
Congratulations to Owen and all 19 students who represented Woodleigh so well at Mt Buller. With Owen still in Year 11, the mountain might want to prepare itself for another year of domination!

Fair Game presented a sporting conversation – about equality, identity, respect and belonging. At a time of intense focus on the effects of hypermasculinity in elite sporting cultures, three guests joined us to chat about what we, collectively, can do to make things safer, more inclusive and more fun for all.
Mitch Brown, the former West Coast Eagles defender who last year became the first current or former male VFL/AFL player to come out as q***r, was joined by Lara from Not All Clubs, an online group dedicated to calling out inequality in sport, particularly at the grassroots level, and Esther Hassett from Built on Connection, formerly a member of North Melbourne’s double-premiership-winning AFLW coaching panel. Together with our Year 11 student MCs, Bec and Bas, they shared stories of struggle, achievement and personal growth – tales which brought the room to attention, as students listened intently and reflected on the responsibility we share to create environments where everyone feels respected, valued and able to belong.

For some people – many people, in fact – the prospect of being put on stage in front of a packed room and being asked to deliver a scene with no preparation would be a fear worse than death.
Yet last night, two teams of students, Mr Elt and The Tippity Toppers, took on such a challenge, taking prompts called from the audience – locations, film genres, occupations – and produced scenes of great import and great hilarity.
Supported by a staff/student band who improvised musical numbers to augment the on-stage action, and a tech crew whose sound and lighting work kept performers on their toes as they searched for and hit their marks with impeccable comic timing, the results were phenomenal.
Both teams showed extraordinary generosity toward their scene partners, and the kind of bravery that only comes from stepping into the unknown in front of a live audience.
Brought to life under the direction of Cathy James, with invaluable coaching support from Brenna at Impro Melbourne , ‘Off The Cuff’ builds on a rich history of Theatresports performances in the Woodleigh Hall.
May this important work continue, in the great tradition of young people acting very, very silly!

What do you get when ten student performers get together with a live student band and an open, lit stage?
Off the Cuff.
You get Off the Cuff.
Fast-paced, improvised Theatresports where anything can happen.
Theatresports is live theatre without a script. Scenes are conjured on the spot, characters appear from nowhere, stories twist in unexpected directions, and the audience helps shape the action. It is performance powered by imagination, quick thinking and the courage to say “yes” to the unknown.
With directorial assistance from Brenna Dixon of Impro Melbourne, our student ensemble has spent months developing the skills of improvisation, listening, working as a team and gearing up to turn spontaneous ideas into memorable theatrical moments.
No two shows are ever the same.

Maths Week saw students and staff battle it out on a daily basis, with competitions galore! Limericks, times tables, letters and numbers, and the highest of high-pressure sporting events... the Rubik’s Cube Challenge.
The Times Table Challenge saw Ms O destroy the field with the kind of mathematical dominance usually reserved for calculators. She’d finished the page before some people had finished writing their names. Mr Bolch (revealing a deeply hidden talent) came second, while Isaac R Y10 finished third, confirming that Woodleigh’s Times Table Challenge is statistically, emotionally and possibly spiritually harder to win than a national Maths competition.*
In the Maths Limerick Competition, Ms Ley took first place, followed by Gracie and Lena, who managed to put down some wicked rhymes about... maths.
Friday’s Rubik’s Cube Challenge saw Ike defend his 2025 crown, finishing ahead of Rhiannon and Gracie with a solve time of 24 seconds. His $50 prize calculates to an hourly rate of $7,500, making him possibly the highest-paid 12-year-old problem-solver on the Peninsula.
Special mention must go to Ms Cleine, who was named ‘Most Enthusiastic Maths Week Participant’ – a true constant in a week of variables.
*He’s won a few this guy.

Under pressure to keep the Wugubank Partnership t-shirt tradition alive, Penbank’s Year 6 students didn’t crumble; instead, they mixed commerce with cake mix and found a batch made in heaven.
The result was no half-baked effort. Our Year 6s raised a whopping $1,058, proving beyond all reasonable doubt that they are smart cookies, and not too bad at raising a bit of dough, either.
It needed a group effort, and everyone rose to the challenge, stirring into action and showing everyone that helping others can be a piece of cake.
Better still, the Penbank PFG are matching the funds raised, delivering over $2000 to cover the cost of gifting t-shirts to members of the Wugularr community.
Well done, Year 6. Simply doughlighful.

Last week, our Penbank Campus Prep students celebrated their 100th day of school with a show-stopping School Meeting performance.
With big smiles, enthusiastic singing and dance moves that suggested they’d discovered a whole new lease on life, these youthful oldies had the audience thoroughly entertained.
