This week we were lucky to have Nicole Howie from River Detectives to teach our students about water quality.
They tested for temperature, turbidity, salinity, ph and phosphorus.

This years theme for the International Day (9 Aug) of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was ‘Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding life and wellbeing’.

We acknowledged this by learning some Taungurung words sourced by a booklet from the Taungurung Land & Waters Council.
Baban - mother
Bubup - baby/small child
Windunth - birth
Bunbunarrik - children

We also discussed the importance of Bruce Pascoe’s book Young Dark Emu in teaching younger audiences about indigenous agriculture, settlements, food stores and respect for nature and family.
Worksheets were completed ✔️⭐️💪

Dreamy, pink beet cookies with school grown beetroot was our baking success today!

Meanwhile in the garden (indoors due to rain) we experimented with growing food from kitchen scraps. A competition for the fastest growing spring onion is underway.

Japanese okonomiyaki!
From the garden we added:
• carrots
• silverbeet
• parsley
• spring onion
These were very easy to make for a range of ages and best of all, well received by our enthusiastic students!

It's officially mid winter and the perfect time to make a seasonal salad.
We picked spring onion, parsley, lettuce and mint from the garden to create a Tabbouleh with winter ingredients.
In place of burghul we used pearl cous cous.
Fresh and seasonal is always best!

Wicking beds are a great way to garden, especially convenient during school holidays - where the water reservoir below sustains the vegetables above.

Last day of Kitchen and garden for term 2.
Today we composted, planted potatoes, flowers and kale! Many hands make light work.

In the kitchen the students requested lamingtons. It was a feast of chocolate and coconut 🥥
Smiles all round. See you in the garden in Term 3.
