I didn't post about this for 10 weeks. Here's why.

In April, we started something at Skill Samurai Lane Cove that I wasn't ready to talk about publicly.

Nine kids. Age 8+ have been working on VEX IQ Robots - real engineering skills, real code and real problem-solving.

I didn't advertise it for new enrolments. I hand-picked every single student.

Why? Because I only get one shot at doing this right the first time. I needed to know, before opening this up to the whole community, whether an 8-year-old could actually do this. Build a working gripper. Debug their own code. Sit with something not working and not give up.

Ten weeks later, I had my answer.
That's the moment I stopped being nervous. Every kid built their own autonomous robot delivering parcels.

We ran the final showcase a weeks ago. Parents in the room. Kids explaining their own robots in their own words: what worked, what broke, what they fixed. Not one script, not one rehearsed line. Just nine kids who spent ten weeks learning to think like engineers.

So here's why I'm posting now.
We're opening this up. One class.
Term 3
8 - 10 spots, that's it, because the whole thing only works if the group stays small.

This isn't first come, first served. It's an application, because I'm still protecting the thing that made batch one work: the right kids, in the room, together.

If your child is 8 or older, curious, and the kind of kid who wants to know how things work, I'd like to meet them.

Term 3 starts 25 July.

If you're wondering whether your child will actually care about coding, read this.

A parent emailed me this week. Routine re-enrolment. Then halfway through: her son Enzo had visited a school they were considering, and one of his reasons for not wanting to go was that he thought he'd have to give up his coding classes.

He asks for extra sessions. He tracks where he sits compared to his peers. He's 100% self-driven. That didn't come from us pushing him. It came from him finding something he genuinely loves. If you are curious to know Enzo's age. He is 6 years old

๐Ÿš€ July Holiday Camps are open - and I'd love to see your child there.

Every parent knows the holiday challenge: too much screen time, not enough that actually grows them.
That's exactly what these camps are built for. Your child walks in curious and walks out having designed something real, solved problems that stumped them an hour earlier, and discovered they're capable of more than they thought.

That spark of "I made this myself"? It's the best thing to watch.

From 3D design to robotics to building their very first tech startup, every camp is hands-on, screen-light, and built to get them thinking - not just consuming.

Spots are limited (some camps cap at just 10 kids), and they fill quickly.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Take a look at the full lineup and book your child's spot.
And if you're not sure which camp is the right fit, just message me - always happy to help you choose. ๐Ÿ’›

Something is happening on Sunday mornings in Lane Cove.

A small group of kids are building, programming, and troubleshooting robots from the ground up. No shortcuts. No kits that just click together. Real engineering thinking.

This is our VEX IQ Specialist Robotics programme - and it's been one of the most rewarding things we've added to Skill Samurai lately.

Term 2 classes are full.

But we're now accepting expressions of interest for Term 3.
A few things worth knowing:
- Classes run Sunday mornings, 10amโ€“12pm
- Maximum 8 students. It stays small deliberately.
- Ages 8+. Mixed levels welcome.
- This is a progression programme.

Students build on what they learn each term. If your child has ever been drawn to how things work - how machines move, how code connects to the physical world, this is worth exploring.

Researchers who study long-term success in children keep landing on the same thing.

It's not grades. It's not even IQ.

It's what psychologists call "cognitive flexibility" - the ability to shift your thinking when something isn't working, rather than giving up or getting stuck.

Kids who build this skill early tend to handle pressure better, recover from failure faster, and find creative solutions where other kids stall.

The interesting part? It's trainable. And one of the best environments to train it is one where kids are regularly given problems that don't have obvious answers - and a safe space to work through them.

That's what we try to build every session.

Iris is in Year 6. She loves rock climbing and training for a marathon. Her mum spent time reading our reviews before enrolling her for camps in the second week of holidays.
On day one, Iris rated her experience 4 out of 5.
On day two, she ran into the classroom, dumped her bag, took her seat and didn't even wave goodbye.
Her mum described something that really stayed with me. She said Iris is normally shy, takes time to warm up, often comes home from school slumped and defeated. In our camp, we let her lead, gave her all the support she needed and things changed.

"I believe she is the true version of herself just by being around them."

I don't have much to add to that. That's the whole reason we do this.

Thank you Genie for taking the time to write that. And thank you for trusting us with Iris. ๐Ÿ™

A student presented his new Qantas aircraft design to the class today.

He'd drawn it up himself, made his own design decisions, and then stood up and walked his classmates through every choice he made.

Nobody asked him to be that confident. It just showed up.
Next week he gets to watch it come off the 3D printer. I already can't wait to see his face.

This is what a 3d printing camp looks like at Skill Samurai Lane Cove.

A, along with his two siblings, have been part of our Skill Samurai family for almost two years now. Watching them show up each week with curiosity and genuine enthusiasm keeps us going.

Moments like this remind me of why we do what we do. It's not just about coding skills. It's about building the kind of confidence and thinking that shows up in real life. In the classroom. On the stage. Everywhere.

This validates every late night, every lesson plan, every conversation with a parent wondering if it's worth it. It is. It absolutely is. ๐Ÿ’™
