🌿Makuru Learning Experiences 🍂

This week, we have been exploring Makuru, the Noongar season that brings the coldest and wettest time of the year in Western Australia. Through a range of engaging activities, the children learned about the changes that occur in the environment during this season.

Educators discussed how animals and plants adapt during Makuru and identified seasonal changes in our outdoor environment. Our creative experiences included painting rain clouds, creating weather collages, and using natural materials to make seasonal artworks. The children also enjoyed storytelling and songs that celebrated Noongar culture and the significance of Makuru.

We look forward to continuing our journey of learning about the Noongar seasons and deepening our connection to the environment. 🌧️🌿🍂

Learning Outcomes:

As Reconciliation Week comes to an end, we have been reflecting on our journey of reconciliation and how we have begun to embed meaningful practices and acknowledgments into our daily routines as a centre. All In means daily practices by all, creating an environment of inclusivity and a space for honest conversations about safety, building cultural capacity and collective accountability. We are excited to keep this mindset as we embark on all our celebrations and explorations in 2026!

Learning Outcome 1: Children have strong sense of identity

As part of our Reconciliation Week, we have been fortunate enough to display beautiful artwork made by one of our very own, talented educators.

“As a proud Whadjuk Noongar woman and educator, it is central to my philosophy to integrate Aboriginal perspectives into my practice and learning environment. I created these three pieces alongside my sister and an elder from my schooling community to highlight the journey of a child through early learning. Each piece centers a local bird including the Wardong (Raven), Manatj (White Cockatoo), and Kulbardi (Magpie). Underneath is a connecting river with community resting spaces throughout to represent each child's journey through transitioning between different rooms and development through these crucial milestones. The Wardong painting features numerous animal tracks and a series of meetings as nursery age children are taking their first steps into their learning journey. In the Manatj painting, these are larger community circles occur as toddler aged children find their connection to the world around them and grow an awareness to their role in those communities. Then finally in the Kulbardi painting there is a small track then leads off the canvas to represent the child's final steps as they leave early learning and enter formal schooling. Creating these pieces was such a joy and I hope that they provide a small moment of reflection on the importance of early learning.” – Maddy Colvin

💫National Simultaneous Storytime 📚

Every year, a picture book created by an Australian author and illustrator is chosen for a free nationwide reading event unlike any other. Millions gather in schools, libraries, homes, preschools and bookshops to read the same story, at the same time, out loud, together.

In 2026, that picture book is Luna Roo.🦘 Today Luna Roo travelled to all our rooms to be read and enjoyed by all in Landsdale. Reading and creating connections through stories is something which is at the heart of our learning and the children adore being engaged in the world of new stories and celebrations.
