🚶‍♀️ Part Way is OK! 🚶‍♂️

Families across East Gippsland are being encouraged to get moving this month by taking part in the local Park and Walk initiative.

Sometimes walking the whole way to school isn’t possible, but even a short walk from a nearby car park can make a big difference.

We're working with four local primary schools on the Park and Walk program.

St Brendan’s Catholic Primary School principal Matthew Hamer says the initiative helps students prepare for the day ahead.

“We like the idea because it complements our philosophies of getting kids moving in the morning, they then come to school ready to learn, their brain has been activated,” he says.

Grade six student Hudson has been walking from the Lakes Aquadome car park to school.

“If you’re in the car you’re not really getting active and moving your body. Whereas when you’re walking or riding, you’re getting your brain awake and moving well.”

Health promotion facilitator Anna Mahony says Park and Walk is East Gippsland’s local version of VicHealth’s statewide Walk to School program.

“It helps kids feel more alert in class, boosts their mood, builds healthy habits for life, and gives families a chance to connect on the way to school,” said Anna.

The initiative is supported by East Gippsland Shire Council. Participating schools include St Brendan’s, Lakes Entrance Primary, Eagle Point Primary and Bairnsdale Primary.

🚗➡️👟 Designated Park and Walk sites are located at:

Lakes Entrance Aquadome
Lakes Entrance Recreation Reserve
Eagle Point Boat Ramp
Bairnsdale Woolworths

Early Learning Matters Week highlights the magic of high-quality, play-based early learning and the pivotal role of early childhood professionals in shaping the future of children and families. 🌟

"Children engaged in early learning often perform better in school, particularly in literacy and numeracy, laying a strong foundation for future learning," said Jasmine, one of our fabulous early childhood teachers. "Additionally, early learning environments foster social and emotional development by providing opportunities for children to interact with peers, develop empathy, and learn cooperation and communication skills."

Early learning, when it's inclusive, positive, and rich, has the potential to be a game-changer for children, transforming them into happy, lifelong learners. 🌱📚 This transformation is especially vital for children who are at a disadvantage or vulnerable.

Early childhood educator Shashi says, "Early learning supports families by providing children with a safe, structured environment, allowing parents to work or pursue education. It also offers resources and guidance to parents, helping them support their child's development effectively."

So join us as we celebrate not only our hard-working early childhood educators and teachers but educators and teachers everywhere! Thank you for making a difference in young lives and just being incredibly awesome human beings 🫶

Our awesome Children's Centre team is still buzzing from the Pallet Play workshop they attended yesterday afternoon.

The team rolled up their sleeves (metaphorically as it was soooooo cold) and created some incredible new resources for our centre from recycled pallets. 🛠️🎨

From a cozy teepee to an adventurous bridge and even a gatehouse fit for tiny guards, the creativity was off the charts! And they did it all while learning about tool safety and how to get the kiddos involved in the process. 🧒👧

The workshop kicked off with a presentation covering everything from choosing the right pallets to inspirational play-space designs. It's all about building unique play spaces that spark joy and imagination, and of course, teamwork!

The little humans are already enjoying these fabulous new additions ✨

Bravo team!👏

WOOHOO 🎉 IT'S OUR CHILDREN'S CENTRE'S 10th BIRTHDAY 🥳

Staff (past and present), children, and their families celebrated ten fabulous years of our children's centre in Lakes Entrance yesterday, with lots of singing, playing, and a birthday cake!

Our CEO, Anne-Maree, proudly acknowledged that the centre's many improvements and initiatives, driven by an exceptional group of staff, have significantly enriched our community. These include the introduction of three and four-year-old kinder, a coastal kinder program, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program and an intergenerational partnership with Calvary Aged Care.

"The GLCH Children's Centre is the place where people want to come and have fun and learn - it's the place where families feel comfortable to send their children, the most precious people who are here today," she says.

Big love and thanks to our 33 amazing staff members who educate and care for 98 super-cute little people. And a special shout out to Cathy, Angela, and Jodie, who have been with us from the start. We sincerely value your dedication and commitment. Thanks ❤️

THIS WEEK IS SCREEN-FREE WEEK! So put your devices down and Get Your Game On Outside 🤸‍♂️🤾‍♂️🚴‍♀️⛹️‍♂️🏄‍♀️

Get Your Game On Outside challenges you to try Screen-Free Week 6-12 May. This is a time for everyone to reduce recreational screen time, increase physical activity and encourage children to step away from their device and rediscover imagination and play.

We all need to balance our recreational screen time with physical activity. Screen-Free Week promotes decreased screen time because spending time on screens can be particularly harmful to kids who need creative play to thrive.

It’s easy to participate in Screen-Free Week. Simply choose the platforms/apps/devices most problematic for you or your family, set a goal (take an hour off, a day, or the whole week!) and enjoy the free time that opens! Let’s put the fun back into imaginative, outdoor play.

Today is World Hand Hygiene Day, and the perfect time to remember how important washing your hands really is – and not just for your own safety but also for the safety of others ✌️

Good hand hygiene is one of the basics of life for Annette, a Lakes Entrance local with a chronic lung condition.

Keeping her hands clean means she has less chance of getting sick. Annette washes and sanitises her hands up to 10 times a day, especially after leaving the house.

“I just wash my hands after doing almost any activity,” she says.

“You’re doing different things all the time and if we can keep the germs at bay, then everybody’s better off.”

You can help prevent the spread nasty germs, ensuring people like Annette with a chronic disease stay well. And it's simple - wash your hands 🖐️🫶

For more information on hand hygiene, visit https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-hand-hygiene-day or WATCH this short video at https://www.paho.org/en/campaigns/world-hand-hygiene-day-2024

Get Your Game On Outside and WIN!! 🤾‍♂️🤾‍♀️

Our new campaign, 'Get Your Game On Outside,' supports Screen-Free Week 2024 from 6 to 12 May.

Screen-Free Week isn't about what you give up. It's about what you get! (which might include a fabulous $250 voucher from 'Venture Out' if you enter our competition!! Details below).

An hour dedicated to online gaming becomes an hour spent outside; twenty minutes looking at YouTube turns into twenty minutes kicking a ball around with your mates; an afternoon scrolling through TikTok becomes an afternoon of imaginative play with siblings and friends.

On ANZAC Day, several team members laid wreaths to commemorate all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations, particularly those during the First World War.

Thank you to Greg, Terry-Anne, Annette and Eamon, who laid wreaths at services in Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Metung and Paynesville. And a special thank you to Penelope, Brianna, Logan, Owen and Hudson from our children's centre, who did an incredible job helping Angela and Jasmine in Lakes Entrance.
