I probably hear “Hi Dad” 15 times before dinner.
And somehow...💖⤵️

she says every one like it’s the first.

Usually she’s not really saying hi.

She’s on her bike.
She comes upstairs from her nap.
She wakes up in the morning and crawls up beside me.
She just wants to know I see her...

I used to think I had to answer with something big.

Most of the time she just wants me to look over and say,
“Hey, kiddo.”

That’s kind of the whole thing right now.

She keeps checking that Dad is still there.

So yeah… I answer every “Hi Dad.”
Even the 15th one.

Parenting is the hardest, most beautiful, and most humbling job in the world. 🤎

And if I could go back and whisper something to the exhausted, overwhelmed, trying-her-best version of me, here’s what I’d say:

1️⃣ Calm is more powerful than control
2️⃣ Behaviour is communication
3️⃣ Connection builds cooperation
4️⃣ Boundaries create safety
5️⃣ Validate feelings but don’t accommodate all of them
6️⃣ Discipline means teaching, not punishing

I used to think my child was pushing my buttons on purpose.

That the whining, crying, hitting or melting down meant they were misbehaving.

But so often, behaviour is the only way little kids know how to show us:

💭 “I’m overwhelmed.”
💭 “I’m struggling.”
💭 “I need help.”

And I used to think being a good parent meant staying in control.

Now I think it’s much more about learning how to guide. 🌱

That also means remembering something really important:

We can validate how our child feels without changing the boundary.

“You’re really disappointed we have to leave.”

can sit right alongside:

“And it’s still time to go.”

Their feelings matter.

But they don’t have to run the show.

Because guidance builds trust.

Trust builds influence.

And that influence matters far beyond the toddler years. 🤎

If I’d understood these things sooner, I think I would have spent a lot less time trying to control the moment…

…and a lot more time helping my child through it while still holding the boundary. ✨

Which one of these resonates for you👇

When You’re Always the One Holding Everything Together

💜 Who supports the person everyone relies on?
When you’re the one remembering everything, organising everyone, solving the problems and keeping the family moving, it can become so normal that you don’t realise just how much you’re carrying.
You can love your family deeply and still feel exhausted by the responsibility.

Needing space, support or boundaries doesn’t mean you care less. Sometimes caring for yourself is what allows you to keep showing up without completely losing yourself in the process.

At Universal Minds Therapy, counselling provides a space where you don’t have to be the person holding everything together.

Sometimes “I’m Fine” Means “I’m Functioning”
💭

There’s a difference between coping and actually being okay.

You can go to work.

Look after the kids.

Answer messages.

Pay the bills.

Make dinner.

Laugh with people.

And still feel completely depleted underneath it all.
Being able to keep functioning doesn’t mean you have to wait until everything falls apart before you deserve support.

Counselling isn’t only for crisis. It can also be a place to understand what you’re carrying, recognise patterns, reconnect with yourself and work out what you need.

💜 You’re allowed to want more than simply getting through the day.

When Your Child’s Behaviour Triggers You
❤️
Sometimes our children touch wounds they didn't create.

A child yelling, rejecting you, ignoring you or having a meltdown can bring up emotions that feel much bigger than the moment itself.

Sometimes parenting brings us face-to-face with experiences from our own childhood — how emotions were handled, what happened when we made mistakes, whether we felt heard, or what we had to do to feel safe and loved.

Recognising that doesn’t mean blaming our parents or ourselves.

It gives us an opportunity to understand what belongs to the present and what may be coming from the past.

That awareness can help us respond to our children from the relationship we want to create, rather than automatically repeating what we experienced.

💜 Understanding ourselves can change the way we connect with the people we love.
