Parliament has now been recalled for next week to rush through new fi****ms reforms, supposedly to “protect the people of NSW over Christmas”.
Let’s be clear:
This was a terrorist attack — not a fi****ms failure.
NSW already has some of the toughest fi****ms laws in the world. If those systems failed, the priority should be identifying where and why existing mechanisms didn’t intervene, not rushing legislation that targets lawful, highly vetted licence holders.
What makes this moment impossible to ignore is John Howard’s position.
Howard — the architect of the 1996 fi****ms reforms and no ally of fi****ms owners — has publicly criticised this rushed response.
When the person responsible for the most significant gun law changes in Australian history says slow down, that should stop everyone in their tracks.
Recalling Parliament days before Christmas to push through reactive legislation is not leadership — it’s political theatre. It shifts focus away from terrorism, intelligence failures, enforcement gaps and accountability, and places it instead on people who were never the threat.
Law-abiding fi****ms owners are not the problem.
Terrorism is.
