When we think about pre-writing skills, we often picture pencils, crayons and mark making on paper. But did you know one of the most powerful foundations for early writing doesn’t start with a pencil at all?
It can start with block play.
Gripping, lifting, stacking and balancing blocks strengthens the small muscles in the hands and fingers — the same muscles children use to hold a pencil.
When children:
⭐️ Pick up small blocks
⭐️ Stabilise larger ones
⭐️ Adjust their grip
⭐️ Gently place pieces on top
They’re building hand strength, wrist stability and finger control — all essential for mark making and pencil grasp.
