It's October, which in aged care means Christmas is basically next week. 🎅

Every year the December calendar fills up faster than the tin of Quality Street in the staff room, and every year someone rings us in November hoping for a miracle. This is your friendly nudge to be the facility that got in early.

The stats landed late last year and they didn't make much noise. Dementia is now the leading cause of death in Australia. It's been the leading cause for women for almost a decade. More than 400,000 people are living with it right now, and most of them are being cared for by someone who was handed a badge, a brochure and a lot of goodwill.

Goodwill matters. It just isn't a skill.

The carers I meet are some of the kindest people in the country, and kindness gets you into the room. What keeps a person calm when they don't know where they are, what helps them eat when the words for hunger have gone, what makes them feel like themselves for an afternoon, that's technique. That's something you learn, practise and get better at, and it changes everything for the person in front of you.

Being dementia friendly was the right first step. Being dementia skilled is the one that actually shows up in someone's day.

When we say theme day, we mean the whole way. 🌼

Daffodil Day at one of our facilities, and our HappiHive Hero didn't just show up, she bloomed. Head-to-toe daffodils, flower crown, yellow belt, the lot.

That's the thing about a theme day. It gives everyone something to look forward to, a reason to dress up, a story to tell the family on the weekend, and a room full of colour that sticks in the memory long after the decorations come down. Daffodils, Christmas, Melbourne Cup, the 60s, Hawaiian, you name it, we'll build a show around it.

We had the loveliest note land in our inbox after our recent concert at Abel Tasman Village Association in Chester Hill.

One of the residents had requested Jolene - so our performers played it together for the very first time, right there on the spot. The Lifestyle Team said it was a brilliant performance, the props were a hit, and the whole morning was full of smiles.

Their only complaint? They were so busy taking photos they didn't get enough time to get up and dance with the residents. We'll take that. 😄

"What's one thing you can still do that might surprise people?"

Turns out, quite a lot. 80 years old, still touching her toes, still doing push-ups, still very much here. Ageing doesn't make anyone invisible. We just stopped asking the interesting questions. 🐝

What a day at the Forever Giving Foundation Women's Health Summit.

HappiHive was proud to sponsor, and I was even prouder to take the stage and talk about the part of women's health that doesn't get enough airtime: dementia. It's been the leading cause of death for Australian women since 2016, and it's now the leading cause of death in the country full stop. That's not a niche topic. That's all of us.

But this room wasn't about doom. It was about voice and choice, about women backing women, and about the kind of engagement that keeps people connected and living well for as long as possible. Big love to every speaker and panellist who shared their story, and to the incredible women who filled the room (and the photo wall) with so much energy.

Meet Donna, one of our HappiHive entertainers, going full Marie Antoinette for Bastille Day celebrations. Complete with a pink powdered wig, a gown fit for the palace of Versailles, and enough theatrical flair to make any resident's day.

This is what we mean when we say engagement isn't one-size-fits-all - it's costumes, characters, culture and a whole lot of fun, bringing history and imagination to life in the room.
