Norway has just banned generative AI from primary schools. Screens are being replaced with printed textbooks.

Smartphones have been out of Norwegian schools since 2024.

The results? Studies have shown an improvement i. student grades, a significant decline in playground and digital bullying, and a remarkable 60% drop in visits to psychological specialists for anxiety and mental health support.

In Steiner classrooms, this has been our practice for seventy years. Screens introduced late, thoughtfully, and only when developmentally appropriate. Not because we were against technology but because we were watching what unchecked technology was doing to childhood.

The world is catching up.

Our Class 2 excursion to Fitzroy Island was an amazing opportunity for the students to explore, learn and experience the beauty of our local environment. They visited the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, they learnt weaving on the beach and learnt about the Gungganyji Country.
Opportunities such as these extend learning beyond the classroom while strengthening friendships, confidence and connection.

As our annual Spring Fair and Open Day approaches, our Class 6 students are finalising their preparations. For the last three weeks they have been focusing on a Business Maths Main Lesson block.

As well as developing curiosity and engagement around real-world concepts such as interest rates, loans, mark-ups and discounts, and cash handling and change, they have also been developing their creativity and flexible problem-solving skills. They have taken ownership over designing and running their own business stalls and are looking forward to providing their goods and services on Saturday, the 12th of September.

Keep your eyes out for the following business stalls:

• Loaded strawberries
• Bubble Tea
• Snow cones
• Toffee apples and popcorn
• Photobooth
• Scrunchies and jewellery
• Henna

Thank You to our Early Childhood families, who make these prizes each year for the Spring Fair! This community spirit is one of the things that make Cairns Hinterland Steiner School such a wonderful place to call home.
This year there are more than 300 treasures waiting to be unwrapped, so come to our Spring Fair and Open Day on the 12th of September, and try out your Fishing Skills!

Amazing to see a cassowary with its chick crossing the road just a few kilometers from the school. Cassowaries are a protected bird, and it was great to see all the traffic patiently waiting for the birds to make their way across the road.
