Alta-1 Kimberley College

Alta-1 College provides an alternative education programme for young people who are not suited to mainstream schooling to complete secondary education.

Alta-1 offers learning pathways to disengaged students across Australia. Our classroom and online programs deliver solutions that include community involvement, therapeutic support and education outcomes. Through our services of alternative education, recovery programs, opportunities for enterprise and community transformation initiatives, our goal is that young people can receive the support and

training they need to survive, and reach their full potential. This is our point of difference and this is ‘The Alta-1 Way’. Alta-1 College is committed to providing a child-safe environment which safe-guards all students and is committed to promoting practices which provides safety, wellbeing and welfare of our children and young people. Alta-1 is based in Western Australia, and operates a school that provides an alternative education program for young people between the ages of 12 and 19 years. The program enables young people who are not suited to mainstream schooling to complete secondary education. Delivered within a supportive and individually focused context, the Alta-1 program incorporates a mix of both campus and online learning pathways as well as TAFE equivalent components.

A big thank you to the wonderful ladies out at ORDCO for hosting our Alta-1 crew and showing around the facility. We learnt so much about farming, seed harvesting, even how spiders are good for a lot of crops. We loved finding out that so many of the crops, like the chick peas and corn end up in the food we buy from Coles. It was a fascinating time that the girls really enjoyed, especially getting ice cream afterwards, haha!

Hard at it out here at Alta-1 this week. We've been flexing our sporting muscles with Garnduwa at the Kununurra Leisure Centre, practicing our soccer skills and a fierce game of netball with coach Silas.
At the end of the week we met with Katrina from Acadia Farms for a tag along tour of what they grow out of town. We learnt to pick pumpkins, about the cotton growing process and even had a go of watering by syphoning. Incredibleagricultural learning taking place for these girls. Brilliant!

The talented Miss Naomi worked with our girls over the past couple of weeks to design their very own shirts in time for Naidoc Week. We are so proud and think they all look amazing. Have a great weekend everybody!

This week went off like a rocket.....hmm hmmm. (yes ok I know...)
Students had a ball building and launching a rocket for science this week and measuring the distance it travelled. Staff also got the first glimpses of our new building which is almost ready to move into. We're thrilled to be able to provide our girls a nice new space for learning and growth. Reminder that there is no school until Wednesday June 4th due to staff training days.

What a great community we live in. Our Alta-1 Girls had the chance to look at future pathways today and possible job opportunities. Huge thanks to the Lily Lagoon Resort staff who showed us everything from how the food is cooked, food is stored and where the coffees are made to how the rooms are made up and what the maintenance and gardening team are working on.

We all got a deeper understanding of how the Tourism/Hospitality sector operates and the hard work it takes to run a beautiful hotel here in the Kimberley.

A big goodbye to Term 1 from our staff here at Alta-1 Kimberley College for the school holidays. It's been a really great term seeing girls come out of their comfort zone, some re-engaging with school and really growing in confidence with their learning.

In the background you'll see the beautiful new building we'll be moving into next term. There will be two new teaching rooms, a full kitchen for cooking classes and barista training and even a 1/2 court for the always popular basketball. Exciting times ahead that's for sure.

See you all back in Term 2 on Tuesday 29th April.

Students have been exploring their environment over the past couple of weeks, getting out on country and finding bush food and bush medicine too. Staff were impressed at the knowledge our girls displayed from their Aboriginal heritage and the interest they had in discovering what's out in nature in our local area.

We knew our girls loved animals, but wow, this was special. We got to visit Kangaroo Haven Wildlife Rescue today with our Alta-1 Students. Mandy and the team showed us around the property, meeting Eagles, Wild Geese, Kangaroos, Wallabies, Snakes and even an Emu and Brolga. The girls got to feed, nurse and care for baby joeys and ducklings and were in their element.

We learnt about the round the clock care it takes to look after injured wildlife and saw the dedication of hard-working volunteers. If you're local to Kununurra and have time to give, please get in touch with the Kangaroo Haven team to help out with feeding and animal care. Thanks!

This past week we enjoyed our celebration night for our Alta-1 Students. Our girls received certificates for horse time learning and workplace training, as well as sewing and cooking skills too. Two of our older students celebrated their graduation from year 12 and some have even grown the courage to head off to boarding school down in southern WA. Staff were incredibly proud and excited by the amazing progress of our students in their learning journeys.

Virtual Reality Learning? You bet!
Our girls recently had a visit from TAFE with a set of VR headsets so we could do some career tasters. Students tried their hand at hairdressing, marine biology, heart surgery, driving instructing, commercial fishing and space travel. We had a lot of laughs seeing students (and staff) panic as they flipped upside down in zero gravity or crash their virtual car into a fence. We'll be doing some more virtual learning to expand their world view and career perspectives over the coming weeks.

This term we welcome a brand new team member, Miss Hayley! So exciting to have her on board at Alta-1 here in Kununurra, bringing a wealth of teaching expertise into our classroom. She joins us from Bunbury and has been teaching for almost 30 years as well as spending time on mission in Sri Lanka with her husband.
