Hi everyone,

After almost 7 years in Kununurra as a Chiropractor I’ll be moving on to a different career — with the goal of keeping our little family here in Kununurra for a longer period of time.

I want to sincerely thank everyone who has come through the doors over the years. It’s been a privilege to be part of the community in this role, aiming to get people back on their feet, back on the field or in the office.

A special thank you to Sally for first bringing me up to Kununurra for a short locum cover, then extending, introducing myself to Lizzie and constantly evolving from there. Like so many others, Kununurra quickly became part of who we are — and from there came our little home and family.

Thank you again to everyone for your trust, humour and warmness over the years. It’s been a chapter that I am grateful for and looking forward to the next.

I have two full weeks left at the clinic, with Friday the 21st being my final day and will catch you around town after that.

– Matt

Little Leaguer’s Elbow: Understanding Elbow Pain in Young Throwers

If your child plays cricket, baseball, softball or even javelin, you may have heard of Little Leaguer’s Elbow. It’s one of the most common sports injuries in young athletes who throw repeatedly — and early recognition is key to preventing long-term damage.

What Is Little Leaguer’s Elbow?
Little Leaguer’s Elbow refers to medial epicondylar apophysitis — an irritation or inflammation of the growth plate on the inside of the elbow. Because children’s bones are still developing, repetitive stress from throwing can pull on the growth plate where tendons attach, leading to microtrauma and pain.

Common Signs and Symptoms
• Pain on the inside of the elbow (especially after throwing)
• Swelling or tenderness over the bony bump (medial epicondyle)
• Decreased throwing speed or accuracy
• A feeling of “looseness” or stiffness in the elbow
• Sometimes pain radiates down the forearm

What Causes It?
Throwing sports require repetitive, high-speed motions that place significant stress on the elbow joint. In young athletes, the growth plate is the weak link — so instead of a tendon or ligament tearing, the bone attachment becomes irritated or inflamed.
Poor throwing mechanics, overtraining, year-round play, and inadequate rest periods all increase the risk.

💥 Why We Get Muscle Cramps in the Heat, Including a Spike in Back Spasms!

Ever noticed your muscles cramping more when it’s hot and humid? 🥵
When temperatures rise, our bodies sweat more to keep cool — but that sweat carries away important electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. When these drop too low, your muscles can misfire, causing painful cramps.

It’s especially common when there’s a sudden jump in temperature or during the first hot days of the season — before your body fully adjusts to the heat.

💧 Tips to prevent heat cramps:
✅ Stay hydrated — water and electrolytes matter
✅ Don’t skip salt entirely if you’re sweating a lot
✅ Take regular breaks and stretch
✅ Gradually build up activity levels as the weather warms

In the Kimberley, it’s easy to underestimate how much heat and humidity affect your body. If cramps keep recurring, it may be worth a check-up to rule out muscle fatigue, nerve irritation, or dehydration effects.

🥭 Mango season = nature’s multivitamin!

Did you know mangoes are packed with nutrients that boost your immune system, improve digestion, and protect your joints and skin?

They’re rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, and antioxidants like beta-carotene and mangiferin — all helping your body fight inflammation and recover faster. 💪

In the Kimberley heat, their natural sugars and high water content help keep you hydrated and energised too.

Whether you’re back from a session at Chiropractor in Kununurra, out fishing, or just relaxing under a mango tree — this local fruit supports your health in more ways than one. 🌿

Healthy movement starts with healthy nutrition — and mangoes are one of nature’s best!

Stay strong, flexible and independent as you age 💪

As we get older, it’s common to notice posture changes, stiffness, and reduced balance. These can all increase the risk of falls and injuries — but they’re not inevitable.

At Chiropractor in Kununurra, our focus is on two main goals:
1️⃣ Maximising strength and flexibility to help you move freely and stay independent.
2️⃣ Reducing fall-related injuries through improved posture, balance, and spinal mobility.

Gentle chiropractic care and movement strategies can make a real difference to your quality of life — helping you stay active, confident, and upright at any age.

🏉⚡️ Finals Footy = Higher Injury Risk ⚡️🏉

Whether it’s NRL stars like Nathan Cleary or AFL legends charging into September, finals footy brings bigger hits, more intensity, and more injuries.

📊 What the research shows:
✅ Semi-pro basketball players do 14% more maximal activity in finals than in-season – more sprints, more contact, more fatigue.
✅ Soccer & rugby studies show injury burden rises late in the season because players are tired and pushing harder.
✅ In elite footy, finals mean key players stay on the field longer and often play through pain.

💥 Common finals injuries:
• Hamstrings & quads (from repeated sprints)
• Shoulders & ribs (from heavy tackles)
• Neck & lower back (from fatigue and collisions)

Even if you’re not in the AFL or NRL, local finals, weekend footy, and heavy work shifts put similar stress on your body. Fatigue and load build-up can quickly lead to back pain, headaches, or joint problems.

✔️ Helping players recover faster between games
✔️ Supporting tradies and workers during busy weeks
✔️ Reducing pain so you can keep moving at your best

📍 Whether you’re chasing premiership glory or just keeping up with work and family life, your spine and body deserve finals-level care.
