August 26th is International Dog Day! But to be honest, everyday is a good day to celebrate our doggos! 🐾 ❤️

Our dogs are an integral part of our farm and worth their weight in solid gold (even if they don’t always listen and respond as expected lol!) 🏆 🌟

I’m resharing this reel from last year in memory of Spike and Ray (who featured in this, and many past posts) who’ve gone to chase rogue bullocks and chew stinky bones in the great pasture beyond x 🪽🫶

The number of cattle needed to fix a fence: zero 0️⃣

The number of cattle that come to watch you fix the fence (that they broke!): all of them!! 🐮 🐮 🐮 🐮 🐮 🐮 🐮 🐮 🐮 🐮 🐮 🐮 🐮 🐮

And they had to give the old farm ute a sniff all over just in case there was anything interesting in there 😂

Exciting news - our first calves of the season have dropped! These two little ones were born yesterday afternoon and are pretty darn cute! Shouldn’t be too long before they have some more playmates 🐮

Today’s sunset was full of lovely soft pastel colours. The smoke in the background is from one of our neighbours doing a hazard reduction burn - definitely good weather for a toasted marshmallow! Not a bad view for the cows either 🌅

I think we are in for another cold evening tonight - stay warm and have a great weekend! 🤠

While our cool mornings are persisting, Nature is sending out signals that we will be moving seasons soon!

Photo 1: Our Grass Trees (Xanthorrhoea) are putting up new spikes! They usually start coming into flower in August/September. Interestingly, the north-facing side of the spike flowers first, before progressing around to the southern side. We tend to have wetter years when there is a big flowering, so will be keeping a close eye on these, with the forecast now officially stating we are in an El Niño weather pattern.

Photo 2: Some of our gums trees are also starting to come out in bud and flowering. The flowers in the photo are from the narrow-leaf Ironbark tree (Eucalyptus Crebra ). The majority of our property is basalt country with narrow leaf ironbark but we do have some areas of silver-leaf Ironbark as well (Eucalyptus Melanophloia ).

Photo 3 and 4: If you look closely you can see a galah high up in this old dead gum. I was watching this bird and its mate flying to a nearby trees to rip off leaves and twigs and bringing them back to line the hollow for their nest! I’ll be keeping an eye on them and hopefully will see some fledglings later in the year!

I also accidentally stepped on something when walking through some long grass the other day - we both made quick get-aways in opposite directions so I’m choosing to think it was a hare, and not anything more slithery!!! 🐍

Well winter certainly made its presence felt this weekend! We woke up to frosts and zero degrees on Saturday and wasn’t much warmer Sunday morning 🥶 The days are beautiful though - as long as you’re out of the wind 🌬️

It is the perfect weather for a Rolled Rib Roast for dinner (or tea depending what you call it!) 🍽️ I’m not the world’s best food photographer (and the roast onions got a bit burnt 😅), but it was very tasty! 😋

Another week and weekend has flown past!
Thought I’d share a few photos of the cattle today!
Photos 1&2: First up is a shoot of our yearling and heavy steers - these are the ones chosen to be in our Paddock to Plate program. The second shot is these same steers in the back half of this paddock. They love hanging out under these trees and the view toward the Bunya Mountains isn’t bad either!
Photo 3: These are a few of our weaner steers and heifers. They are working through fenced off sections of the creek flats. As you can see from the light it’s late afternoon and the rest of the mob has gone back to the water yard already, but a couple are getting in a few last chomps before they leave.
Photo 4: This is Bro! While he’s not a cow he does like working cattle so I think he deserves a photo! He’s taken to sitting in the bike when he’s waiting in the Ute to work - he likes the elevated view I think!
Photo 5: I can’t post photos without adding in a sunset 🌅 This one is taken from down on the creek flats. I thought we might get a shower from the dark cloud but nothing came of it - other than a nice picture!

Just in case anyone wasn’t sure, this is *not* how this electric polywire fence is meant to look! 😬

Our weaners had a grand old time running through this fence into a nice fresh paddock of feed by the creek, getting it nicely tangled in the process! The untouched feed and a dead battery on the electric fence energiser were all the encouragement they needed to stage a break out! ⚡️

Our dogs Collie and Bro got them back in the right paddock while we untwisted, untangled and unknotted the poly wire and put the fence back up. 🐕

Thank goodness for the light on the back of the ute as it was getting dark by the time we got the replacement energiser. 🌌

Hopefully that will keep everyone on the right side of the fence! 👍

It was another busy weekend of the farm, trying to get jobs completed between showers of rain!

Photo 1: I always enjoy seeing the clouds sitting on the Bunya Mountains across the paddocks. This paddock is having a rest after being fed off, and you can see the green shoots starting to grow ☁️

Photo 2: A bit of a “circle of life” photo - cow eats grass, cow poos, dung beetles carry the nutrients into the soil and then little marsupials like bettongs and bandicoots eat bugs and little roots shooting in the soil!🪲

Photo 3: Our winter pastures are growing well, with native legumes in amongst the shooting green and drying grass. 🌱

Photo 4: The Wallabies and Kangaroos are enjoying the green pick from the unseasonable winter rain, and love nothing more to find a tree to have a mid-day snooze under - even when the annoying humans take photos! 🦘 😁

🤠Our packs include a range of cuts, vacuum sealed in family friendly portions, and delivered in our refrigerated cold room to central locations. Our beef is unfrozen, ready to cook up on the BBQ or stock up the fridge and freezer!

📦📦Our 20kg packs are $414 (no GST) + $5 temporary fuel surcharge for delivery (total $419) and include:
- Steaks (eye fillet, rib fillet, t-bone, y-bone, rump, round, blade, osso bucco and diced steak)
- a Rolled rib roast and a Topside roast
- Silverside (available fresh/natural or corned)
- Brisket (corned rolled or fresh/natural rolled or flat)
- Gluten free sausages (thick, thin or mix) and
- A-grade mince

📦Our 10kg pack are $207 (no GST) + $5 temporary fuel surcharge for delivery (total $212) and include:
- a selection of steaks
- gluten free sausages (thick, thin or mix)
- A-grade mince
- A Rolled rib roast OR a Topside roast,
and
- Silverside OR Brisket
(roast/silverside/brisket randomly allocated for 10kg packs)
