Kowanyama State School

Kowanyama State School Welcome to the Kowanyama State School page! Since the beginning of 2014, we have also started to enrol students in our Year 11 and 12 Pathways program.

Our school of 210 students from PrePrep to Year 10 is located just inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria, approximately 1½ hours by plane or 8 hours by car from Cairns in Far North Queensland. As well as our commitment to getting students to school every day (Every Day Counts), our focus has always been on literacy and numeracy. We continue to devote a significant amount of time and resources into a

ll aspects of literacy and numeracy - every day. This is further evidenced through a structured timetable that is devoted to each of the key aspects.

Prep’s First On Country Trip

Our Prep students had a great time on their very first On Country trip today!

We headed out to Car Crossing, where we ate lots of yummy snacks, shared stories and spent time exploring the area.

The highlight of the day was definitely building a cubby out of sticks. Everyone got involved collecting sticks, figuring out where they should go and working together to build it.

It was a great first trip out On Country, and we’re already looking forward to the next one!

Work Experience 2026 👷🏽‍♀️👨🏽‍🔧

Today marked the first day of Work Experience for our Year 9 and 10 students! For many of our students, this is their first opportunity to get a taste of the workplace, explore different career pathways, practise workplace skills and start building connections within our community.

This week, our students are getting hands-on experience across a range of workplaces, including carpentry, the airport, administration and the Rangers, with students also placed with Bartos Construction and One Tree Child Care.

A huge thank you to Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council and all of the different teams who have welcomed our students, as well as Bartos Construction and One Tree Child Care for providing valuable opportunities for our young people.

This is just the beginning, with students completing three days of work experience this week, followed by an extended work placement later in the term.

We’re excited to see our students have a go, learn new skills and start thinking about where their pathways might take them!

Congratulations to all this week’s award winners! 🔥💯🔥💯

Last week, our Year 9/10 students enjoyed an valuable camp at Oriners, learning on Country alongside Kowanyama Rangers and Traditional Owners. Students explored cultural and carbon burning, traditional tools and local history while fishing, cooking and caring for camp together. They also completed activities toward their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.

A big thank you to the Kowanyama Land and Sea Rangers and Traditional Owners for sharing their time, knowledge and Country with us, and to OnTrek Holloways Beach for supporting our students with their camps and Duke of Edinburgh journey.

This week, our senior students took another exciting step in their Remote Futures journey at Kowanyama State School, interviewing with local employers ahead of next week's Work Experience Program.
Students met with workplace supervisors to discuss their roles, responsibilities and expectations, while also learning about communication, workplace health and safety, and staying safe at work.

These conversations are an important part of preparing our young people for the workplace and helping them build the confidence, skills and behaviours needed for future employment.

A huge thank you to our local employers and the Kowanyama community for supporting our students and investing in their futures. We can't wait to see our students begin their work experience next week!
