That’s a wrap for Book Week 2026 at Creative Childcare Kotara.

Beyond the vibrant costumes and beloved characters, Book Week highlights a deeper truth: stories are powerful tools for learning. Books do more than spark creativity and curiosity; they shape a child’s emotional, intellectual, and social world while building essential life skills.

As part of our Book Week special menu, Chef Meegan got some assistance from our book character friends. Today's lunch was themed around the book 'Napangardi's Bush Tucker Walk' and the children helped pick herbs from our very own Bush Tucker Garden to add to the Beef Stew with native spices.

Children's books are a powerful way to explore and celebrate First Nations Peoples, histories, cultures and perspectives.
Today's story introduces children to rich cultural traditions, sustainable land management, language, and the deep connection First Nations peoples share with Country.

Part of Book Week is the children getting to choose their favourite book character to embody that character for the day. The social benefit of this is that children get a chance to have fun and creatively express themselves amongst their peers and family members.
The educational benefit is that, by dressing up as their favourite bookish character, children are given the time to truly connect with books and to associate reading with fun. The power of choice plays an important role in costume selection as well. Children are more likely to connect with a book that they have chosen for themselves, so allowing your child to select a character idea for themselves further strengthens their bond with the book.

Today was Cloudy......... with a chance of Meatballs thanks to our Chef Meegan's Book Week menu.
Books are gateways to imagination, and Book Week allows children to explore new worlds, ideas, and perspectives. As they listen to or read stories, children learn to visualize characters, settings, and events, which stimulates their creativity. Dressing up as their favourite book characters or re-enacting scenes from stories further encourages imaginative play, an essential aspect of early childhood development.

Did you know that Book Week was first held in Australia in 1945?

The 2026 Children’s Book Week theme is ‘Symphony of Stories’. The musical theme highlights how books blend words, pictures, and feelings together like instruments in a symphony, celebrating the wide mix of characters and adventures found in reading.

At Creative Childcare, we view Book Week as more than a dress-up week, but as a moment to deepen what we do every day: building language, sparking curiosity, and laying the foundations that children carry into school and beyond.

Follow along to see what other bookish adventures we get up to this week.

This week at Creative Childcare Kotara we celebrated Science Week. Our educators planned many engaging experiences for our children to explore and learn different ways to incorporate scientific thinking into their everyday learning. The children had so much fun exploring bubbles, creating magical potions and making predictions, observing changes and discovering what happens when we mix different ingredients together.

Last week, we welcomed our preschool families to our annual Transition to School Night, combined with our beautiful Art Exhibition.

We were thrilled to welcome guest speakers from Kotara South Public School and Belair Public School, who shared valuable insights, practical advice and helpful information to support our children and families as they prepare for the exciting transition to primary school next year.

We were also grateful to have an Occupational Therapist from Eat, Talk, Play join us for the evening, answering questions and sharing helpful strategies to support our children as they get ready for this next chapter.

Our Art Exhibition was a wonderful celebration of the children’s creativity, imagination and learning. It was so special to see our families admiring and celebrating the children’s incredible work.

A huge thank you to our wonderful guest speakers, families and educators for making the evening such a memorable and meaningful experience. We are so proud of our preschoolers and excited to see them take their next big step!
