The characters for Sil Lim Tao 小念頭 explained

小- Siu/Sil
Siu or Sil translates to small, little, young or few. There are other characters that also have the same meaning but have a different context. Hence the reason we use this character, as it shows us that there is a straight upright line in the center that is evenly balanced by the two strokes either side of it. This can be interpreted as the Sil Lim Tao form being based on having an upright, balanced posture with attention to the center line.

念- Nim/Lim
The character 念 has a few different meanings that again depend on the context that it is being used. It is most widely translated as idea or thought when used in conjuntion with 頭 Tao, but it also means (to study, to read and to think of)
It is made up of 2 components, 今 Jin meaning "in present conditions, at this time, today or now"
And 心 Xin meaning "heart, mind, center, core or intention" is underneath Jin.
So when these two characters combine it gives a lot more depth to the character 念 than just idea or thought. You can see that it relates to being solely focused on what you are doing in the present moment, don't think about anything else except what you are doing right now!
Use your mind to control the Qi from the Dan Tien and be fully immersed in it by training with all your heart.

頭- Tao
Tao is translated as head. It also can mean "the beginning or end" and "first"
The components that make up this character are 豆 which means bean or pea and 頁 meaning page.

The Sil Lum Tao form can be likened to a seed that contains the basic components of a majestic tree within its small shell. 豆 (bean/pea)
It is also the "textbook" of wing chun that lays down the foundation lessons that will carry on into further parts of the Wing Chun system and can be referred to for clarification when one strays from the fundamental principles. And this ties in with the component 頁 (page)
With Tao meaning beginning or end, it stands to reason that the Sil Lum Tao form is the first form that is learned to provide the fundamentals which are then utilized in the Chum Kil form that leads us further into Bil Jee. And the Bil Jee techniques,(when used in a recovery or emergency application) are designed to bring the practitioner back to a position where they can apply the Sil Lum Tao principles that they learned in the beginning of their Wing Chun journey.

An unpleasant reality and thoughts to those who have been unfortunate to have been attacked. Experimenting with various blade defence including machete. I would like to point out that regardless of your skills, knife defence sucks.

As per Sifu Dave Richardson post. When I first started discussing and teaching some 18 years ago some may have considered it fear mongering, however as an ex policeman I've already seen my fair share of knife and other violence in Tasmania. Instead of turning up after the event I now choose to teach those who want to learn how to best protect themselves in these terrible situations. I've helped more people in violent situations in my capacity as an instructor as opposed to a policeman sadly. Knife defence is particular is extremely complex however understanding it and having some skills are by far better than having none in my opinion. Stay safe everyone

You work hard to build a good life, car insurance, house insurance, life insurance... But shouldn't you be proactive and take action to maintain health and protect your life and others? Violence doesn't descriminate, just because you are a good person doesn't mean it won't happen to you. Life is precious Perhaps training in martial arts is EXACTLY what you need.

We teach a range of professional people and going to work with a black eye is generally not a good look, therefore contact training at real distance with protective gear is a good alternative.
