There is something incredibly special about watching children of different ages play, learn and grow alongside one another.

It often begins in the smallest moments, a younger child watching closely, an older child making space, a toy passed over, an idea copied, or a game made just a little more welcoming.

These moments may seem ordinary, but they are full of connection, confidence, empathy and learning.

Mixed-age play gives children the opportunity to learn from one another in ways that feel natural and meaningful. Younger children observe, imitate and gradually find their place within the group, while older children begin to lead, include, explain and care.

At Beyond the Burrow, we believe childhood should not feel rushed or overly programmed.

Children need time to play, to connect, to notice one another and to simply be.

There are moments in our day that are so simple, yet they stay with you long after the play has moved on. Today, it was a cardboard box that became the stage for one of those magical moments.

While we were outside, I noticed two little eyes peeking over the top of the box, bright and curious, full of cheeky delight. I knew instantly who they belonged to. With playful drama I called out, With a beaming smile, H dropped the box below her chin to reveal herself, face glowing, giggles bubbling up before she ducked back behind the box again. And just like that, the most humble, joyful game of peek-a-boo was born.

It wasn’t long before the other children, drawn in by the energy, wandered over to see what all the fuss was about.

What began as a quiet little hiding game became something much more, it became connection. Between educator and child, between peers, between hearts. There were no toys needed, no plan in place, just presence, play, and the freedom to be completely immersed in the moment.

These are the moments that matter most. Where children feel seen, heard, and valued. Where their joy becomes our joy. Where they direct the play and we simply follow with open hearts and open arms.

A place where safety and love are not just felt, they are known.

If we want our children to have resilience grit and self-confidence then we need to give them opportunities to make their own decisions and play freely in nature and experience these things themselves 🌿 I will always be huge advocate for risky and nature play.
