Yiramalay Studio School

Yiramalay Studio School To provide opportunity and greater access for Indigenous students across Australia.

At the Yiramalay/Wesley Studio School, we understand the importance of an education that recognises and responds to language and culture, and builds a strong sense of identity in our Indigenous young people. At our two residential sites in the Kimberley, WA and Melbourne, VIC, we work in close partnership with communities to develop the many and varied talents, passions, and abilities of Years 10-

12 students. What we teach, and more importantly, how we teach, gives our students the knowledge and skills required for success in their communities and the wider world. Through our on-country learning experiences in the Kimberley, and rich opportunities at Wesley College, Melbourne, we are able to personalise the learning and provide pathways into employment, TAFE and university after Year 12. Placing equal value on wellbeing, industry learning and academic learning, allows our students to build respect for themselves and develop important leadership skills.

A wonderful celebration of community, culture and learning was shared at Yiramalay Studio School Open Day on Wednesday, 29 July. A large crowd from across the Fitzroy Valley and beyond, came together to celebrate the unique educational partnership between the Bunuba people and Studio Schools of Australia, in delivering a unique residential model of education on country for students in Years 10, 11 and 12.
Yiramalay students played a large part in the Open Day program. Year 10 student Kingston Robertson, was MC and introduced our new Principal, Ben Marsland, and guest speakers, Helen Drennen AM, CEO, and June Oscar AO, Bunaba Elder and former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner. They all spoke passionately about the power of education grounded in culture, and the importance of ensuring this unique model continues to flourish for future generations.
Both past and present students, Zeth Shandley ( Year 12 graduate 2025 ) and Jathan Robertson (current Year 12 2026 ) shared inspiring stories about the opportunities, experiences and pathways the program has created for them.
Together, we continue to build strong futures while honouring the knowledge, traditions and the leadership of the Bunuba people.

On Country Learning at Manjali Studio School
What an incredible day of learning on Country for our Manjali Studio School students on July 23, 2026.
Guided by Bunaba Traditional Owner Keith Andrews, students explored the rich cultural and historical significance of Tunnel Creek, Lillimooloora Police Outpost and Ruins, and Windjana Gorge.
Walking through the ancient Tunnel Creek caves, students learned about Bunaba Country, the importance of caring for Country, and the remarkable story of Jandamarra—the Bunaba warrior and Indigenous freedom fighter whose courage and leadership remain an important part of Australian history.
This outdoor classroom experience immersed students in local culture, history, and the landscape itself, creating meaningful connections that simply can't be replicated within four walls.

What a wonderful day for Yiramalay students to start Term 3 yesterday at the spectacular Windjana Gorge!

Our students experienced learning in a way that simply can't be replicated in a traditional classroom. They spent the day fishing, walking along the river, exploring the breathtaking natural environment, and making fresh damper together in the heart of the gorge.

Days like today remind us that the best classroom is very often on country.

Manjali Studio School's Year 9 students were immersed in the culture, history, art and politics of Perth during an exciting educational tour from 13–19 June.
Throughout the week, students visited the Western Australian Parliament House, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Western Australian Aquatic Centre, Kings Park and Fremantle Prison, and challenged themselves with an exhilarating treetop walk.
The trip was designed to foster teamwork, resilience and independence while broadening students' understanding of the many opportunities available to them beyond school. Through these shared experiences, they developed confidence, strengthened friendships and gained valuable insights into their future educational and career pathways.

From the bright stars of the Kimberley to the bright lights of the Gold Coast!
Last week, Yiramalay Studio School students and staff embarked on an unforgettable learning journey, stepping beyond Bunuba Country, to explore the local language and culture of the Yugambeh people, on Ghana country to discover the region's unique flora and fauna, and to immerse themselves in exciting entertainment experiences unlike anything they'd encountered before.
At Yiramalay Studio School, learning doesn't just happen in the traditional classroom—it happens through adventure, cultural exchange, and real-world experiences that inspire confidence, curiosity, and connection.
