Kindergarten is more than just a place to play. It's where children build confidence, develop social skills, make friendships, and discover a love of learning.

Through play-based experiences, children learn to communicate, problem-solve, explore their creativity, and gain the skills they need for a successful transition to school.

At kindergarten, every day is an opportunity to learn, grow, and belong.

Spring has arrived in the Yarra Ranges and our kinder yards know it 🌸

The days are getting longer, the garden beds are waking up, and there is genuinely nothing better than watching a group of our kindergarten children discover their first spring blossom.

This season we will be watching things grow, talking about what changes and what stays the same, getting our hands in the soil, and spending as much time outdoors as the weather will allow.

Nature is the best classroom we know and spring is when it really shows off.

As the weather warms up, sun protection is an important part of keeping children safe while they learn and play outdoors is here at YRK ☀️

Remember the five SunSmart steps:
👒 Slip on sun-protective clothing
🧴 Slop on SPF 50+ sunscreen
🧢 Slap on a broad-brimmed hat (No hat = no play)
🕶 Seek some shade
🚶 Slide on some sunglasses

UV can be high even on cool or cloudy days, which is why SunSmart practices are an important part of keeping children protected while they learn and play outdoors at YRK.

Have your say!

The buildings where children learn, play and grow are an important part of our kindergarten communities.

Yarra Ranges Council is seeking feedback on its Draft Kindergarten Asset Management Plan, which will help guide future planning, maintenance and investment in Council-owned kindergarten buildings. Families and community members who use and value these facilities are encouraged to have their say.

Feedback closes on Sunday 13 September 2026.

RUOK?
Caring is at the heart of what we do at YRK.
We care about the children who come through our doors each day, about their families, about educators who give so much of themselves.

R U OK? Day is a reminder that sometimes caring starts with a simple queston: “Are you OK?”
We do this by noticing when a child or family might need support, taking the time to listen and checking in again.
These are the things we want our children to grow up surrounded by: kindness, empathy and people who look out for one another.

So today, check in with someone in your world and ask: R U OK?

Today is International Literacy Day and at YRK, literacy is woven into everyday learning 📖

Long before children can read a word on a page, they are already developing the foundations of literacy. Through stories shared, songs and rhymes, rich conversations with educators, and imaginative play that naturally extends language and vocabulary.

At our kindergartens, literacy lives in the everyday moments. The label on the mud kitchen jar. The sign on the garden bed. The name on the peg. The story at group time that has everyone leaning in a little closer.

Children who grow up surrounded by language, who are listened to, read with, and given space to tell their own stories, are actively building literacy skills right now, through the experiences and connections that matter most to them.

Happy International Literacy Day from all of us at Yarra Ranges Kindergartens 🌿
