Want to learn tennis? 🎾
Go to a tennis court.

Want to learn to paint? 🎨
Go to an art studio.

Want to build social skills?
Confidence in the community?
Regulation in busy environments?
Independence?

Why do we assume that has to happen in a clinic?

Developmental Educators work where life actually happens.

At the shops.
At the zoo.
At the beach.
On public transport.
With peers.
In the community.

Because you can practise coping with noise where there is noise.

Practise social skills when a real social moment happens.

Practise road safety at an actual road.

Practise independence while actually doing things independently.

Real environments are unpredictable.
They’re messy. They change. They involve other people.

And that’s exactly the point.

Real goals. Real situations. Real learning.

Just a day at the zoo, right? 🦁

Wrong.

There’s a LOT happening here:

🎟️ Buying tickets & handling money
🗺️ Reading maps & navigating
🗣️ Ordering food & talking to unfamiliar people
🤝 Taking turns, negotiating & making decisions together
🧠 Managing crowds, noise, waiting & big emotions
💪 Carrying belongings & managing your own stuff
⏰ Planning the day & keeping track of time
🙋 Asking for help & advocating for what you need
🌏 Building confidence out in the community

This is Developmental Education in the wild. 🌿

WAIT… DON’T SQUISH IT! 🦋

Wondering why Kiama is covered in moths?

They’re Bogong moths — and they’re on one of Australia’s great wildlife migrations.

🌏 They can travel up to 1,000 km to the Australian Alps.
⭐ They can navigate using the stars.
📉 Their population crashed by up to 99.5% several years ago — so seeing so many now is exciting.
🐭 And when they reach the mountains, they’re an important food source for the critically endangered Mountain Pygmy-possum.

So no spraying. No squishing.

Kiama is currently on the Bogong Highway. 🚗

Captured the moment Lulu somehow acquired BOTH my phone and my car keys…

And I’m standing there hoping like heck “I’m gonna count to THREE…” still carries some weight. 😬😂

One… two… two and a half…

✨ 🌿 NEUROAFFIRMING 🌈💛
It’s a word we hear a lot — but what does it actually mean?
It’s pretty simple:
Recognise differences.
Respect the person.
Support genuine needs.
Build on strengths.
Protect autonomy.

It’s not about changing who someone is — it’s about giving them the support to develop skills and confidence to thrive as they are.
