"This is not MATH1613, why are things like 'log' here?" If someone asks me, I would say: Because it makes the calculations we do in FINS1613 easier and I am not joking. But how?
1. For almost any numbers a and r, log(a^r) = r times log(a) [a^r means 'a to the r-th power' here]. This is the main reason why we use logs in FINS1613.
2. If a=b, log(a)=log(b), and vice versa. So we can substitute one for the the other.
3. Now let me mix the two above. If a^r = b, then log(a^r)=log(b), so r times log(a)=log(b), which means r = log(b)/log(a). Easy huh?
If you want to learn a little bit more about logarithms, check out the video clip below. If you want to learn even more, get any single variable calculus book. It must be easier than you expected, because it is written for someone like you.
