When we begin working for a new company, we have to deal with many new things such as our new role, work colleagues and environment. These things take some time to get used to but how do we fit in? This topic has come up in conversations quite a few times where, as gay people, we often find it difficult to fit in and feel accepted in the workplace. We all want to feel accepted, to live our authentic life and show up just as we are but it can be tricky in the workplace when our values don’t align to those we work with. So how do we actually fit in? One of the key things I have found in my working life is just to be me and to find that one person who I get on with who eventually becomes my ally. I have always tried to work for companies where our values are aligned and the work environment works for me. Below are some tips you can apply to help with fitting into the workplace.

Make the effort to get to know people and seek an ally if you can.

Include any mutual interests in conversations.

Get familiar with inclusion and anti-discrimination policies.

If something doesn’t feel right, speak up.

Be a good employee.

Share what you want others to know about you but don’t overshare.

You don’t have to come out at work but only disclose what you’re comfortable with.

Just be you and don’t feel that you need to compromise yourself.

As I reflect on last week’s q***r PoC catch up and looking forward to the next one at the end of the month, I’m reminded about sharing cultures. In friendships and relationships where cultural differences exists, it’s important to bring in and share your cultural identity.

But how do we that when we are in in*******al relationships? Here are some tips.
1. Ask questions about your partners’ family background. This will help you to gain perspective and put you in a position of being able to provide support.
2. Acknowledge the difficult aspects of their culture as it will give you an understanding of your partner and the perhaps some of the struggles they have faced.
3. Exchanging of food is a great way to explore culture by experiencing different tastes, exploring customs or traditions.
4. Share travel stories even learn some new words or phrases.
5. Celebrate your uniqueness as individuals but also as a couple. You both have something unique to share with your world and each other.
5. Honour, respect and acknowledge your differences but also CELEBRATE them.

Yesterday was the best of days where I connected with other q***r PoC via a meetup group and it felt great to be in such company on a crisp but sunny afternoon in Melbourne. I feel blessed to have met some wonderful individuals where we could laugh, get to know each other, share stories, learn things and just hang out. I have been looking for a group like this for so long and I’m looking forward to the next catch up.
This is what connection looks like for me, to be with people with different stories but with a common theme running through it, be it our culture and heritage or other life experiences. It feels great to be with others like me and to be part of something.

What if I were to tell you that intimacy goes deeper than the physical so that you can have better relationships? What does intimacy look like? How does one go about introducing and creating it?
It starts with your needs and wants and making the first move. Sit with yourself, identify what it is you truly want and map out what it looks like. How does that make you feel? Many of us want deeper connections and often that starts with a conversation about where we currently are and where we’d like to be. So the first steps are to identify what you want then map it out and take small steps to discuss it with the person you want the deeper connection with.

It’s never too late to open up and express your love and vulnerability to one of your biggest supporters. I grew up as a gay black kid feeling like I was the only one or that something was wrong with me. I navigated many things privately because I didn’t feel I measured up to what society or family ‘expected of me’.
Fast forward to the current version of myself where over time, I’ve realised how much I value my relationship with my brother and value myself.

Whether it’s with your parent, a sibling, partner or friend, share a side of you or your affection for them which will allow them to see you. When they begin to ‘see’ you, it can feel like the penny has finally dropped for them. What we previously thought they thought of us could be because we didn’t fully allow ourselves to share the deepest side of us.
It’s never too late to make that first step, try it and see what unfolds.

I believe that your life purpose doesn’t have to be set in stone and it can happen at any stage of your life and it can happen multiple times. When I was younger, I really believed that my life purpose was to work in customer service and to travel, which I did for so many years, but I knew there was more to my life than just that. My next ‘life purpose’ was to make a difference, so started working in the disability sector, mentoring and providing social support for members of the LGBT community, all of which I’ve been doing for many years. My purpose now is to help YOU, by providing coaching and mentoring.
