From Professional Practice to the presentation stage 🎤✨

The annual MSE Professional Practice Presentation Night brought students together to share the experiences, skills and lessons gained during their industry placements – with plenty of great presentations, conversations and connections along the way!

🏆 Congratulations to our prize winners, and a huge thank you to our judges and industry guests for sharing their time and expertise.

And, of course, thank you to the MSE Staff and MATSOC students who helped bring the night together! 🤝

A fun (and slightly competitive 👀) way to wrap up Term 2 with our MSE UG Peer Mentoring community! 🎉🍕

Students put their knowledge to the test with Hard Quiz — featuring everything from Ninjago and sailing to The Big Bang Theory — before moving on to Heads or Tails and Rock Paper Scissors, with popper balls up for grabs as prizes 🏆

More importantly, it was a great chance to take a break, share some pizza, catch up and make some new introductions before the end of term. It was also lovely to have a few familiar faces from Chem Eng join us and add to the sense of community across the programs.

Thanks to everyone who came along and made it such a relaxed and fun way to close out the term! 💛

Forging connections, sharing research, and exploring what’s next ✨

It was fantastic to see students, alumni, academics and industry professionals come together for the annual MATSOC x PGSOC Forge Your Future event.

From insightful conversations with our keynote speaker and industry panel to an evening of networking and the annual PGSOC Poster Competition, the event showcased the incredible research, talent and opportunities within our Materials community.

Congratulations to all our poster presenters and prize winners! A huge well done to the MATSOC and PGSOC teams, whose hard work on the night and behind the scenes made the event possible 👏🏼

Good company, great conversations and just a little friendly competition 🎲

Our Shuffle & Social afternoon last week, was the perfect excuse to take a break from assignments and the stress of term (or life) to enjoy some board and card games.

Whether you came to win, unwind, or simply catch up with fellow students, we hope you had a great time. Thanks to everyone who joined us and those who were ‘volun-told’ to play Pictionary by Ben 😅 – we’re looking forward to catching up at the next event!

Better late than never…our mid-term study session finally made it to the feed 😅📖

Between study breaks, hot chocolates, snacks and an accidental (somewhat) matching outfit from Ricky and Ben, and some friendly trivia battles covering materials science, chemistry and more, it was the perfect chance to learn something new, recharge, and catch up.

Our study tips might have arrived a little too late for mid-terms, but they’re just in time to keep in your back pocket for final exams and future assessments 💡

Thanks to everyone to came along, we hope it helped make the mid-term rush a little more enjoyable.

A fantastic showing from our Higher Degree Research (HDR) students at the annual UNSW Science Postgraduate Research Showcase! 👏

Our School was proudly represented by 13 HDR students in the 1-Minute Thesis (1MT) competition, and other HDR students, who showcased their research as part of the poster competition.

A special congratulations to Tingtin Mei (joint supervised by Dewei Chu & Zhi Li), who took home one of the Faculty Poster prizes, and Yangjun Yue (joint supervised by Pramod Koshy & Naresh Kumar), who was awarded the School 1MT Prize 🎉

We’re incredibly proud of all our HDR students for sharing their research, passion and innovation with the wider UNSW Science community. Well done to everyone who took part 🤩

🎓 Introducing our Scholarship Stories series!

Meet Alex Wong, a Materials Science and Engineering student whose scholarship helped ease financial pressure, allowing her to focus on her studies, get involved on campus and make the most of her UNSW experience…so far!

From singing in the Collegium Musicum Choir to spending eight months on exchange in Canada, Alex’s journey shows how scholarships can help create opportunities beyond the classroom.
