🎓 Introducing our Scholarship Stories series!

Meet Alex Wong, a Materials Science and Engineering student whose scholarship helped ease financial pressure, allowing her to focus on her studies, get involved on campus and make the most of her UNSW experience…so far!

From singing in the Collegium Musicum Choir to spending eight months on exchange in Canada, Alex’s journey shows how scholarships can help create opportunities beyond the classroom.

💬 “Go for it! Don’t doubt yourself or your strengths and abilities…”

Stay tuned as we share more student scholarship stories over the coming months.

We were a bit quiet on Instagram last month…but that’s because we’ve been busy hosting high school outreach visits on campus! Scroll through to check out some of the stats! 📊

A huge thank you to the high school teachers who organised these visits, and to the School Outreach staff and students who helped facilitate the activities.

We loved sharing what Materials Science & Engineering is all about!

Kicking off Term 2 with good coffee, good company, and good conversation!

The MATSOC x MSE UG Peer Mentoring coffee catch-up was the perfect chance for students to reconnect, tackle a few puzzles together, and settle into the new term. The donut-filled event was perfectly timed with National Donut Day on 5 June – some things are just meant to be! 🍩

Here’s to a fun and successful term ahead 🤝

Ending the term on a high at the MATS1192 x MSE UG Peer Mentoring End of Term Event 💫

MATS1192 students researched and presented on a specific application of a material – complete with hard-hitting Q&A and feedback along the way. We wrapped up with peer mentoring highlights and a few fun awards to recognise impact, connection and contribution.

Huge effort from everyone to presented and participated in the MSE UG Peer Mentoring Program this term 👏

Day 2 of UNSW Experience Day 2026 👏

Last week, we wrapped up an incredible two days by welcoming Year 11 students into Materials Science & Engineering for another round of hands-on discovery. Same activities, different students – and just as much curiosity and energy ⚙️

Beyond the demonstrations, students were introduced to research in thin film applications and its impact on next-generation technologies.

A fantastic way to close out two big days – thanks to everyone who joins us and helped make this day a huge success!

Day 1 of 2026 UNSW Experience Day 🙌

We kicked things off by welcoming Year 10 students into Materials Science & Engineering through an exciting and hands on workshop. From Maglev train demos and liquid nitrogen ice cream to Charpy impact testing and a glimpse into the School’s cutting edge research into 3D printed materials and how they’re shaping the future.

Amazing energy, great turn out, and plenty of curious minds in action. Thanks to everyone who joined us.

Stay tuned next week for Part 2 👀

Mid-term pulse check ✅ Came for the snacks, stayed for the reflection.

Here’s what we’re seeing:
🤝 People are showing up and connecting
💬 Conversations are real (there’s been some yapping and laughing)
📱 Support continues beyond the scheduled catchups

We also heard that some of you are still figuring out how to make the most of peer mentoring - so we’ve included a few simple prompts to help!

First cab off the rank for our 2026 High School Outreach Program is Northern Beaches Christian College 👏

From tensile testing and Charpy to uncover how materials behave, to examining optical microstructures and learning about the SMaRT Centre, students got hands-on with materials science in action.

The best learning happens when you can see it, test it, and experience it 🔬
