UNSW quantum computing spinout wins industry award Diraq, a startup founded by UNSW Sydney’s Scientia Professor Andrew Dzurak, has been recognised at the 2025 NSW iAwards.

After nearly a six year hiatus, BLUEsat will this week be restarting its high-altitude balloon activities. On Sunday 6 July, a team of 12 BLUEsat members travelled under the supervision of Prof. Elias Aboutanios to Rankins Springs (see https://maps.app.goo.gl/iVED65N5WLd5rt7HAhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/iVED65N5WLd5rt7HA) to launch a light stratospheric balloon to an altitude of approximately 30,000 m. The balloon will carry a payload carrying three cameras as well as a number of sensors to record the flight dynamics (speeds and accelerations) as well as environmental parameters such as temperature and pressure. Upon reaching its highest altitude, the balloon will burst and the payload will fall back to Earth on a parachute. Once back on the ground, the payload will be recovered and the data and video extracted.

After releasing the balloon, the chase and recovery team will head to the predicted landing site. The balloon is continually being tracked during its flight and the prediction is continuously updated.

Weather permitting, the expected launch will take place today at 9:45am.
