“Well, we have been waiting for this for a long time, and now it is finally here. Pearson has released the detailed scoring information to teachers and partners, reflecting the changes introduced in August 2025. You can see the full scoring breakdown and task weightings in the table shown in the attached image, followed by some of my comments below.”
Speaking Section
Key changes in task contributions include:
• Read Aloud
The contribution of this task to the Speaking score has decreased substantially. It no longer contributes to the Reading score.
• Repeat Sentence
This task remains important for both Listening and Speaking; however, its contribution to Listening has been reduced compared with pre-August 2025 weightings.
• Describe Image
Traditionally a high-value Speaking task, its importance has increased further. It now contributes 31% to the Speaking score, making it one of the most influential item types in this section.
• Retell Lecture
This task remains a core integrated skill item, with a relatively stable contribution of approximately 13% to both Listening and Speaking, similar to the previous scoring model.
• New and Reweighted Tasks
o Summarise Group Discussion
This task has become a major contributor, accounting for 19% of Speaking and 20% of Listening scores.
o Respond to a Situation
This newer task now contributes 13% to the Speaking score, appearing to absorb some of the weighting previously assigned to Read Aloud.
Writing Section
This section has undergone some of the most substantial rebalancing.
• Summarise Written Text
The weighting of this task has increased dramatically. It now contributes:
o 28% to Writing
o 23% to Reading
Previously, its contribution was estimated at approximately 9–11%.
• Essay
The Essay task now contributes 31% of the Writing score, almost doubling its previous estimated weighting of around 16%.
Reading Section
• Fill in the Blanks (Drop-down)
Formerly known as “Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks”, this task no longer contributes to the Writing score. This is a notable change that may make achieving higher Writing scores more attainable for many candidates.
It continues to carry significant weight in Reading, contributing 25%.
Listening Section
Several important adjustments have been made:
• Summarise Spoken Text
This task now contributes 18% to the Writing score, representing a substantial cross-skill weighting.
• Write from Dictation
This remains one of the most important tasks for Writing, contributing 23%. However, its contribution to Listening has declined to 13%.
• Highlight Incorrect Words
This task continues to provide meaningful contributions to both Listening and Reading scores and remains one of the more accessible item types for well-prepared candidates.
Overall Implications for Test Takers
• Speaking now places greater emphasis on Describe Image and Summarise Group Discussion, while Read Aloud has diminished influence.
• Writing is now dominated by Essay and Summarise Written Text, which together account for more than half of the section score.
• Reading weightings remain substantial for core comprehension tasks, with reduced cross-marking into Writing.
• Listening shows a redistribution of integrated skill weightings, particularly affecting Summarise Spoken Text and Write from Dictation.
These changes highlight a stronger focus on integrated academic communication skills and extended productive responses.
