Australia's automotive industry is facing one of its most persistent skills shortages. According to Jobs and Skills Australia, the average fill rate for automotive jobs was just 41% in 2024, and for motor mechanics specifically, it dropped to 38%. Diesel mechanics? Even lower.

That means for every 3 mechanic jobs advertised, only 1 actually gets filled. The workforce that keeps this country moving is aging out, and there aren't enough skilled people coming in to replace it.
