Understanding Underachievement

High potential doesn’t always translate into high achievement. There are many reasons a capable student may become disengaged or produce less than they’re capable of.

This week’s HPGE focus explores underachievement, signs to look for, and simple ways families can help reignite motivation, confidence and a love of learning.

KHS NASCA GIRLS BRING HOME THE SHIELD!

The 2026 Northern NASCA Cultural Camp, hosted at Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation Centre in Lennox Head, was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect, compete and celebrate culture.

A highlight of the camp was our KHS NASCA girls claiming the Grand Final Shield with an impressive 7–2 win over long-time rivals, Melville High School!

The victory saw the shield return to Kempsey after our girls narrowly missed out in last year’s grand final against Ballina Coast High School.

It was an all-Kempsey grand final, with plenty of laughs, great sportsmanship and even sisters lining up against each other!

Congratulations to our NASCA girls on an outstanding achievement and for representing KHS with pride.

The shield is back at KHS!

Building Skills for the Future!

Our students have wrapped up a fantastic four-day PCYC Job Ready Program at the Connect Centre!

Throughout the program, students:
🩹 Completed their First Aid qualification
👷‍♀️ Gained their White Card
💬 Developed their interview skills
💪 Built confidence and workplace readiness

We are incredibly proud of the way our students approached the program. They showed respect to our guest facilitators, worked hard, and engaged positively throughout the four days. Thank you to the PCYC and guests for making it a great experience for all involved!

Well done, everyone!

NSW Legislative Council Public Speaking Competition

Last week, Year 10 students Sylvia Rose and Nicola Giles travelled to Macksville for the NSW Legislative Council Public Speaking Competition.

Congratulations to our students, who represented Kempsey High School with distinction. A special mention to Sylvia, who delivered an engaging and thought-provoking speech on “Messages Unread and Opportunities Lost.”

Opportunities like this give young people a platform to develop their voice, share their perspectives and engage with issues that matter to them and their communities. They build confidence, communication skills and an understanding of the important role young people can play in public conversations and civic life.

Well done to our students for stepping up, having their voices heard and representing KHS with pride!

Exciting Opportunity for KHS Marine Studies Students!

Year 10–11 Kempsey High School Marine Studies students are invited to apply for the 2026 NSW Maritime Immersion Program at the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania.

The program provides authentic learning through university, industry and on-water experiences, helping students build their maritime knowledge, confidence and awareness of future pathways in engineering, seafaring and maritime business.

This is a fantastic opportunity for KHS students to take their learning beyond the classroom, gain hands-on experience and explore future study and career pathways within the maritime industry.

Interested KHS students should see Mrs Herwig for more information and details on how to apply.

Experimental Science - Industry Talk

Recently, our Year 9 & 10 Experimental Science class was treated to an exciting industry talk from Josh Gresham, a Search and Rescue Pilot, as part of the CSIRO Scientists in Schools program.

Josh shared insights into his career, experiences in search and rescue, and the important role science and technology play in aviation and emergency response.

A fantastic opportunity for our students to connect their classroom learning with real-world science and explore where a career in STEM could take them!

A big thank you to Josh for taking the time to share his knowledge and experiences with our students.

KHS Hair & Beauty Taster Program at Port Macquarie TAFE – A Fantastic Experience!

As part of the Kempsey High EPP (Educational Pathways Program), 20 students from Years 9 and 10 recently took part in the Hair & Beauty Taster Program at Port Macquarie TAFE.

Students explored the exciting world of hair and beauty, participating in two practical hands-on sessions covering both hair and beauty disciplines. Each group enjoyed 1.5 hours in each area before swapping, for a total of 3 hours of skill-building activities.

The visit also included a campus tour, giving students insight into where apprentices and trainees complete their studies. Well done to everyone who joined in and made the most of this valuable EPP opportunity!
