HSC DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY // DESIGN BRIEF 1. Designing and modelling a sustainable bush-fire resistant house for individuals living in a high risk fire prone area. The inclusivity of sustainable and fire-resistant features would assist in preventing extreme damage to the exterior and interior of the infrastructure whilst having a cohesive appearance making it no different to other houses on the market.
Actively considering ember proof vents should be incorporated as it is the main cause of many home destructions due to wildfires. The final design will incorporate ember proof vents, a sealed windows system throughout the house and non- combustible external materials to minimise the overall vulnerability during a bushfire.
DESIGN BRIEF 2.
• Design a functional and visually appealing outdoor table setting.
• Encourage positive family interaction and communication.
• Support divorced and separated families in reconnecting.
• Promote face-to-face interaction through shared meals and conversations.
• Suitable for balconies and garden environments.
• Be space-efficient, durable, and structurally strong.
• Use weather-resistant materials for long-term outdoor use.
• Create an inviting space that supports healthier family relationships.

A DAY OF THANKFULNESS // Grandparents Day was a wonderful opportunity for our College community to pause and give thanks for the special place grandparents hold in the lives of our students and families.
Our grandparents were warmly welcomed by our Year 8 students before joining their grandchildren in classrooms across Primary and Secondary. They were able to observe lessons, participate in activities and experience a little of their grandchildren’s everyday school life. The smiles and positive feedback from grandparents showed how much they valued this opportunity to learn and spend quality time together.
Following the classroom visits, grandparents and grandchildren continued their time together over recess. Snack packs were provided for grandparents and staff, while students enjoyed fruit and popcorn. It was lovely to see the College community gathered together, sharing food, conversation and time with one another.
At its heart, Grandparents Day was about thankfulness. The Bible reminds us not to take our blessings for granted, but to recognise them and give thanks: “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever” (Psalm 107:1).
Grandparents are among those blessings. They bring experience, wisdom, memories, encouragement and many years of love and support. Days such as this remind us to slow down, appreciate the people God has placed in our lives and, importantly, to say “thank you.”
We are very thankful to all the grandparents who joined us, and to our students, staff and everyone who helped make the morning so special. Most importantly, we hope the day encouraged us all to count our blessings, value our time together and remember to express our thankfulness for the people God has given us.

PDH // Year 1 are exploring Healthy Eating and how media advertising influences our food choices. After analysing our school’s ‘Crunch & Sip’ posters to see how they encourage healthy habits, students designed their own posters. Each groups artworks feature everyday foods and simple, encouraging health messages to remember and share with others.

ONLINE PRESENCE // You may have noticed some changes to the style of photos we share on the Heritage College Sydney social media pages.

Heritage College Sydney is committed to celebrating the wonderful things happening across our school, while also taking sensible steps to help protect our students and staff in an increasingly digital world. As technology and AI continue to develop, publicly available images can potentially be misused or manipulated in ways that were not previously possible.

In line with recommended guidelines from the eSafety Commissioner and Independent Schools NSW, we are changing the images that we share online.

We will no longer share close-up images of students and staff on our social media pages. Instead, we will continue to share the Heritage story by focusing on what our students are doing, learning and achieving; from classroom activities and creative projects to sporting events, performances and the many experiences that make our College community unique.

This change is not about sharing less of what happens at Heritage. It is about finding thoughtful and creative ways to showcase the action, the learning and the achievements while reducing the potential for images to be used inappropriately.

We appreciate the understanding and support of our College community as we make this change. We will continue to proudly share the people, activities and achievements that make Heritage College Sydney such a special place.

More focus on the action. Less focus on the faces.

GEOGRAPHY // Year 8 Geography students attended the Penrith Lakes Environmental Education Centre to investigate Water Management Strategies in the Penrith Lakes area. Students participated in water testing and explored a range of interventions that focused on sustainable management of water in both natural and built environments. This mandatory fieldwork complimented their study of the Stage 4 Geography unit ‘Water in the World’, and provided students with an excellent example of sustainable management of water in urban and rural environments for the purpose of recreational water storage.

PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY EXCURSION // Roar! The bus bursts into life and we are driving along the road. It’s a 45 minute drive to the Observatory and Planetarium. I’m just looking out the window when I notice we’re coming into the city. I bubble up with excitement. 5 minutes later... we’re here!

By Year 4 - We’re going to eat our lunch on Macquarie University’s lawn. I put my bag down and started eating my lunch. About 20 minutes later, we started to head to the Planetarium. When we went inside, Andrew told us about the different planets. Then we went to the observatory where we got to look at the sun. Then we hoped on the bus and roared to school. My favourite was the Planetarium because it was echoey, round and cool.

In the morning before we went to our Observatory and Planetarium excursion, Year 3 and 4 got to watch the movie ‘Hubble 3D telescope’. Then we quickly ate our crunch and sip and recess. On the bus we all had something to do. When we arrived, we went separate ways. Year 3 went to the telescopes while Year 4. were hearing more about the planets. When we both finished, we swapped places and we got to see the sun with the telescopes. We also discovered more about the planets and got to see the big telescopes.

Yesterday we had an excursion. The excursion was held at Macquarie University. We had so much fun learning more about planets. My favourite part was when we looked through the telescopes and saw the sun. There was also a huge bubble and we got to take a closer look. We enjoyed our time there with our class experiencing new things.

“The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round” we sang on the bus going to Macquarie University. We went into the dome to see the universe and all the other planets in the solar system including Earth, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune, Mercury and Uranus. We also saw Pluto. After that we went outside to look in the telescopes. We went to both domes and the 2 telescopes in the control centre.

CDSSA ATHLETICS // Heritage College Sydney was proudly represented by 46 students at the CDSSA Athletics Championships at ES Marks. It was a fantastic day of competition, with our students giving their best across both track and field events and coming home with an impressive collection of ribbons!
A huge congratulations to the 17 students who have qualified to compete at the AICES Athletics Championships on 8 September. We also celebrated three CDSSA Age Champions, along with at least five students who finished in the top three overall for their age group, an outstanding achievement!
We are incredibly proud of the way our students competed and represented Heritage throughout the day. The number of ribbons brought home was a wonderful reflection of their effort, determination and willingness to give every event their best.
A big thank you to Mr Phillip for his assistance throughout the day and to the parents who came along to support and encourage their children. Your support is always greatly appreciated. Congratulations to all 46 competitors and best of luck to our 17 AICES representatives!

VISUAL ARTS // Inspired by the book The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister, Year 2 created their very own colourful 3D fish sculptures! Throughout our art lessons, we explored how different artists use colour, pattern, shape and texture in their artworks.
Students used these ideas to design their own individual fish scales, experimenting with bright colours and a variety of patterns. We then brought all of our individual scales together to create one special 3D fish. Just like The Rainbow Fish, every scale is different and unique, showing the creativity of each student while creating something wonderful together as a class.

TECHNOLOGY MANDATORY // Year 8 have been working on obtaining their sewing machine licence. To obtain their licence, they need to safely operate a sewing machine, and produce straight controlled lines of stitching. Their practice task includes; Sewing 5 straight horizontal lines, 5 straight vertical lines, a square, a rectangle, a circle, a zigzag line and sew around the edge of a piece of fabric and use a reverse stitch at the beginning and end of every line.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY // For our last prac, we made Spaghetti Bolognese. This dish has a thick sauce, spaghetti pasta for the base. We substituted mince for artificial meat. The dish was very delicious , simple, affordable and easy to make at home. Spaghetti Bolognese is a popular dish in Australia, following the wave of Italian migration after WW2. Now it is one of the most common foods cooked in family meals in the country. (Year 9 student)
