SPEED, DISTANCE, INNOVATION & AESTHETICS COMBINE IN OUR BRAGG’S CUP!

Our Year 7 Science students put their creativity, teamwork and engineering skills to the test today in the annual Bragg’s Cup.

Working in small groups (or independently), students designed, built, tested and refined their own balloon-powered racers, with one key rule — each racer had to be powered by just one standard balloon.

The final designs competed across speed, distance, innovation and aesthetics, showcasing plenty of clever thinking, problem-solving and creativity in this STEM challenge.

Congratulations to our winners and to all Year 7 students who took on the challenge! And a huge thank you to the teachers who helped facilitate this extended design challenge during their Science lesson. We appreciate you!

WHAT A PERFECT WAY TO START THE LAST DAY OF TERM

Just before the bell this morning, one of our talented students filled the SN Block foyer with music, taking a few quiet moments at the piano as students and staff arrived for the day. We took a quick video to share the joy with you.

It’s a sound we’re lucky to hear often, with students regularly stopping to play the piano and share their talents with those passing through on their way to class. These spontaneous moments of music add something special to the everyday life of our College community.

What a perfect note to start the last day of term!

Archie Carroll

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to KGSC therapy dog Archie.
When Archie was 7 months old, he was rehomed with Miss Carroll and her four children (all ex-KG students). He was a cheeky, energetic, barky little boy who quickly learnt (with his favourite treats) how to bark less and play more. Archie changed lives for the better, always knowing which kid needed the first hug when they came home from school – a skill he used when he started working at KG in 2020 as a therapy dog. Always happy for students to pat his soft furry coat and feel calm. His unconditional love helped so many students and staff, even some students who feared dogs, eventually feeling safe enough to have a little pat of Archie. Archie helped many of us get through some challenging times. He was also quite the entertainer and made students laugh, like when he enjoyed singing (howling) “I love you”.
Archie started each day at KG with a visit to HR to fuel up on his favourite treats (dried chicken) so he could do his best therapizing for the day. Mary and Leesa were his favourite – he knew their desk drawers were full of the good stuff. He was a calm, chill little guy who loved to provide multiple dopamine hits and reduce blood pressure for students and staff alike, showing them unconditional love and kindness. We lost count of how many class visits and calls for help he responded to. When we heard, “Miss Carroll, can you bring Archie”, he was always up to working his magic. He loved being with students and staff at school, whether it was in class, running cross country, wreaking havoc on the oval or on school camps.
As our good boy got older, a little deafer and slower, having to say goodbye to him one day was in the back of our minds. But even though you are ready, you are not. Nothing can ready your heart for what happens next. Archie passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on the 27th August 2026. He is dearly missed his family, particularly his mum, Claire Carroll, and his big sister, Monnie Mollison and by the KGSC community. Rest in peace, Archie.

• everyday strategies that help young people feel safe, capable and understood
• ways to maximise their willingness to talk
• practices that deepen connection and strengthen our capacity to guide and support young people — even when we aren’t there

YEAR 7 CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE CHALLENGE!

This term, our Year 7 students took part in the Containers for Change Class Challenge during My Personal Best (MyPB) lessons, working together to reduce waste and make a positive contribution to our environment and community.

Across four weeks, each Year 7 MyPB class collected eligible drink containers, including plastic bottles and aluminium cans, to be counted and donated for recycling.

Together, the cohort collected an incredible 8,181 containers!

Congratulations to 7L, who took out first place with a staggering 1,686 containers!

It was fantastic to see our Year 7 students embrace the challenge and show what can be achieved when we work together as a community.

YEAR 8 ACADEMIC ACHIEVERS BARRAMBIN FARM MATH INCURSION

Across Weeks 9 and 10, as part of the Academic Achievers Global Leaders program, Year 8 Math students learnt about Electrical Conductivity and pH at the KGSC Barrambin Farm. Students learnt that small changes in data can have big impacts on people and the planet. Students graphed and predicted nutrient ratios so as to keep the Electrical Conductivity (EC) of the water at the optimal level for their plants. They learnt that responsible resource management involves considered and correct calculations!

Students were engaged to 'wreck' a litre of water by adding magnesium sulphate, and then 'fix' it by dilution. They learnt that farmers apply this knowledge in the real world context of hydroponic farming to solve water quality and scarcity issues.

These incursions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
SDG #9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure - good ideas that serve everyone,
SDG #10: Reduced Inequalities – food for everyone, and
SDG #11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – fairer futures for everyone.

These incursions were run by Nicola Zwart, with the invaluable assistance of the Year 8 AAGL teachers Leon van der Merwe, Tayla Fitzsimon and Daniel Sullivan, as well as Chris and Liv from Urban Growers.

Congratulations to our Under 15 Girls Football Team, who recently competed in the Bill Turner Trophy National Finals.

The Bill Turner Trophy is a nationwide knockout competition that began with 875 teams and more than 13,000 student athletes representing schools across Australia. Winning the Queensland section of the tournament and progressing to the National Finals was an outstanding achievement in itself.

Our girls narrowly lost their semi-final in a hard-fought match against eventual National Champions Westfields Sports High School. The score was locked at 1–1 at full time, and after two periods of extra time and drop-off, Westfields broke the deadlock to secure a 2–1 victory.

The KG girls backed it up the following day, taking on St John Paul College in the bronze medal match and finishing their campaign in style with a convincing 8–0 victory.

An incredible achievement on the national stage. Congratulations to our players, coaches and everyone who supported the team!
