🦶Defensive Footwork🦶

Footwork isn’t only important for our Attack.

When defending, the ability to be able to shorten our stride on approach, steady ourselves and get square prior to contact helps us make good quality contact.

This drill works on
👊Coming from all angles
👊Straightening on approach
👊Contact- Same foot/Same Shoulder

Next step- Work on defending a moving target- have the Pad holder moving simultaneously on different angles.

Give this one a go at your next session ✅

🏁Start 🏁

Doesn’t matter what it is you want to do. Just start.

If you are unsure how to get there, seek help.

If you don’t start, you will never reach where you want to be.

When you do finally reach that goal, you will only wish you started earlier.

We all need a vision in life.

Where do we want to be?

What do we want to achieve?

Once our goal is written down we need to set out a process to follow every day in order to achieve it.
It sounds like hard work, however following a process is easy.

Make a check list of things you want to achieve daily, weekly, monthly or yearly.
✅ tick these things off
Follow a process.
Curve balls will be met. Things will change and obstacles will be faced.

The process will always be waiting for you to get back on track.

What is your goal?
What are you following daily to ensure you reach it?
⬇️ would love to hear what’s in store for you and the process you are following.

3 Man Box Drill

If during pre season you get sick of running aimlessly up and down the field.

Use this drill to help make continuous running more bearable.

⭐️4 cones set in a square shape
⭐️ 3 players
⭐️ Pass one direction
⭐️ Run the other

⏰ Set a time goal.
🟡Every drop = a penalty
❌No Chest catches

* Focus on Early Catch & pass release.

Morning Session

We were lucky this morning to witness Parramatta Eels ho**er REED] working hard on his conditioning in preparation for Pre Season.

Reed was kind enough to come over and speak to the boys giving some tips on passing and defensive movement patterns.

The main takeaway from Reed:

✅ Practice the fundamentals constantly to improve.

✅ NRL players are always working on Catch/Pass/Grip as well as defensive movements.

✅ It’s ok to make mistakes: that’s why we train to improve areas that need to be better.

Champion fella, thank you so much for your time. REED]

Warm up game

Rats vs Rabbits

I learnt this drill when I was under 12s- my coach at the time used it for our warm ups.
It always stuck with me.

✅ It helps engage the kids
✅ It’s competitive
✅ Reaction time
✅ Encourages active listening and focus prior to a session.

I always thought it was only for young kids, until I watched an NRL team use it in their warm up prior to training in January.

Consistency is one of the best attributes you can have.

If you stay consistent and build good habits you can achieve any goal you set yourself.

This goes for anything in life.
> Work
> School
> Life
> Weight Loss/Gain

Sometimes we face tough conditions or ‘Don’t feel like it’.
Trust me, you will feel better when the task is done!

Grip Practice 🏉

17/10/2021

⚡️CORE SKILLS⚡️

Along with getting your body well conditioned in Pre-Season these are the ‘Big 3’ Core skills to implement into every session.

Grip: this can be done using just a footy. Practice getting a strong hold on the ball. 4 fingers on 1 panel, thumb on another. Start by just putting the ball down and picking it up, alternating hands each time. Only use 1 hand. Try to get a strong squeeze and feel the ball firmly in your grip.

Pass off the ground: another drill you can practice on your own. It may not happen often but there will be a time during the season where you get caught at dummy half. Use a goal post or wall as a target.
Approach the ball square (front on).
Place inside foot close to the ball
Outside leg opens up to target
Stay low- release the ball and follow your pass with body and hands.

Tackle Technique: important for improvement but also safety. Correct tackle technique will limit misses and also give you confidence when defending.
Eyes up-shorten footsteps on approach-split feet - same foot/same shoulder- head to the side - drive shoulder through opponent-wrap arms and squeeze.

This week I’ll go into more depth on these 3 fundamentals.

Stay tuned for drills to help you level 🆙
