Some of you already know that a few years ago I resigned from the department. I was completely burnt out. It was impacting my mental and physical health. I wasn't sleeping etc etc. I know I don't need to go into depth about that to you all.

Fast forward to Term 3 last year when I felt 'some' interest in returning to teaching. I threw my CV into the fixed term pool for primary teaching positions. Just to see if anything came up. Something did. And it came up fast.

I was offered secondary English. πŸ€”
So, Term 4 last year saw me teaching English to high school students in a rural DHS. (Secondary teaching is a completely different world!) I felt like a pre-service teacher without a mentor. And without the content knowledge. On top of that, nothing had been left about what the students had done that year.πŸ˜’

I agreed to extend the contract for this year. And to do the LEAP program offered by DoE. (What is WRONG with me? πŸ˜†)

The irony is, when I started studying teaching in 1995 I started in secondary English but switched to Primary. Full circle.

I still feel way out of my depth. And definitely in 'graduate' mode. I had it in my head that it was expected I would just slide into a new role, out of my area of expertise and become some sort of super organised, super knowledgeable English teachers. I had well over 20 years education experience - teaching, Curriculum Consultant, Deputy, SCSA. In primary. And I struggled. Because I had to learn something new. (Did I mention secondary is a completely different world?) 😬

So, I put my feelers out for help to other English teachers. And the response was incredible. So much stuff has been shared, offers to chat etc etc. So here I am, still out of my depth but at least able to tread water. 😊

I miss primary teaching (oh primary Maths, wherefore art thou? See what I did there?πŸ˜†) but will bite into this new role enthusiastically.

I will not (I hope) give it so much that I burn myself out again. 🀨
And at the very least, qualifications for secondary english and primary, plus experience in both, opens up more options for me.

Often what admin call "best practices" are really unnecessary evils for teachers.

Literally though. Plus, throw in some meetings on top. πŸ™„πŸ˜³
