What a night of connection, conversation and community!

Last Wednesday, PKUC was proud to co-host KDCCI Business After Hours with Karratha Senior High School at our Karratha Study Hub.

It was fantastic to see local businesses and community organisations come together for an evening of networking, new connections and conversations about the important role education plays in the future of our region.

A huge amount of work went on behind the scenes to bring the evening together, so a very special thank you to our PKUC team, the KDCCI team and KSHS team. Events like this really are a team effort, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed.

We also loved seeing the talented KSHS students in action - performing live music, preparing the food and serving our guests throughout the evening. The food was fantastic, the PKUC bar was buzzing and together we created a warm and welcoming space for everyone to connect.

We’re incredibly grateful to be part of such a connected community. Let’s keep the conversation going!

🙌Congratulations Jie Tu Nie!

Jie is studying a Graduate Diploma of Extractive Metallurgy at Murdoch University and has received the City of Karratha Academic Excellence Scholarship as part of the PKUC Scholarship Program.

As a full-time working mother, Process Advisor at Rio Tinto and postgraduate student, Jie balances work, study and family commitments while continuing to achieve a high academic standard.

The scholarship will help ease the financial and logistical pressure of her upcoming four-week compulsory practical assessments in Perth, including travel and childcare costs, allowing her to focus on completing her studies.

Jie shared:

“Receiving the City of Karratha Academic Excellence Scholarship is an incredible honour and a profound relief for my family.

Having called Karratha home for over 13 years, I am deeply invested in our region’s future. Advancing my expertise in Extractive Metallurgy equips me to tackle critical local and global challenges, from sustainable resource development and decarbonisation to Greensteel pathways right here in the Pilbara.

I am sincerely grateful to the City of Karratha for recognising my hard work and providing the financial support I need to complete my studies. I must also extend my deepest thanks to the Pilbara Kimberley University Centre. Having a dedicated local space for remote study, sitting exams, and accessing vital academic information and support has been absolutely life changing.”

A huge thank you to the City of Karratha for supporting Jie’s study journey and investing in the development of local skills and expertise.

Congratulations, Jie! We look forward to seeing how your knowledge and experience continue to contribute to a stronger and more sustainable future for the Pilbara.

Congratulations Janet Poczyhajlo!

Janet is studying nursing through CQUniversity Australia and has received both the CQUniversity Nursing Scholarship and Shire of Ashburton Tom Price/Paraburdoo Scholarship as part of the PKUC Scholarship Program.

Living and working in Paraburdoo while studying remotely can bring significant financial pressure, particularly with travel, accommodation and other study-related expenses. These scholarships will help Janet continue her studies while focusing on developing the skills and confidence she needs for her future nursing career.

Janet shared:

“I would like to thank the Shire of Ashburton and CQUniversity for awarding me their nursing scholarships. As a remote student living and working in Paraburdoo, this support makes an enormous difference to my ability to continue my studies. Your generosity truly makes a meaningful impact.”

A huge thank you to CQUniversity Australia and the Shire of Ashburton for supporting Janet’s study journey and helping regional students continue their education while living and working in their local communities.

Congratulations, Janet! We look forward to seeing where your nursing career takes you.

Still buzzing from FeNaClNG last weekend!💪❄️

We loved being part of such a great community event alongside our STEM in Sport program sponsor Santos Ltd.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by, had a chat and took on our Ice Bath Challenge. It was such a fun way to connect with families, young people and the wider Karratha community while sharing a little of the science behind sport.

A special shout-out to Yani, one of our STEM in Sport students, who helped out on the day and did a fantastic job showcasing the program to the community. Thanks Yani!

And the STEM fun continues - we’ll be at Karratha Senior High School STEAM Festival next week!

See you there 🙌

📊 Census Day is approaching - Tuesday, 11 August!

Being counted helps ensure regional and remote communities are properly represented when decisions are made about education, training and essential community services.

Make sure everyone in your household is included. Be sure to check your local community pages for Census support available in your area.

For our Karratha community: free Census support is available at the Frank Butler Community Centre from 11am–2pm, with ABS staff there to assist.

Every person counts. Every response helps shape the future of our regional communities.
