Have you tried just a simple coloured water activity with your messy bub? Sensory play is an excellent way for children to develop their fine motor skills. Molding, scooping, splashing and pouring are all excellent for developing advanced motor function in young children. These skills will eventually go on to help them in school with writing, drawing and other delicate motor functions.

Children are naturally curious of the world they inhabit and are constantly wanting to experiment and see the reactions of their actions.

Sensory play is a great way for children to experiment with action and reaction- seeing the effects of their actions- in a safe and fun environment. If a child is playing in a way that seems destructive or is making a mess, our first instinct may be to stop them. However, this is a great sign that the child is eager to take part in some messy sensory play, and allowing them to do so gives them the opportunity to develop their cause and effect and problem-solving skills, as well as learn more about touch, taste, smell and sound

Sensory play provides great hands-on fun and learning experiences for young children, as they explore and discover more about the world through their senses. Sensory activities can also calm a child, help focus and engage.

School holiday fun 5+yrs

Basic Glue Slime Recipe

Ingredients:

* 1/2 cup white school glue (e.g. Elmer’s or similar PVA glue)
* 1/2 cup water
* Food colouring or glitter (optional)
* 1/2 tsp baking soda
* 1 tbsp contact lens solution (must contain boric acid and/or (sodium borate)

Instructions:

1. Mix glue and water in a bowl until well combined.
2. Add food colouring or glitter and stir in.
3. Add the baking soda and mix thoroughly.
4. Slowly add the contact lens solution, stirring constantly. The slime will begin to form.
5. Knead the slime with your hands for a few minutes until it becomes less sticky and stretchy.

✅ Tips:

* If it’s too sticky: Add a few more drops of contact lens solution.
* If it’s too rubbery: You may have added too much activator—try adding a bit more glue.
