Finland is heating entire towns with sand. 🏔️ Finnish startup Polar Night Energy built the world's first commercial sand battery by filling a giant insulated silo with crushed soapstone and industrial sand, then superheating it to over 600 degrees Celsius using surplus solar and wind electricity. The stored heat stays locked inside the sand for weeks or even months with minimal loss and gets released through district heating pipes whenever winter demands it.

The world's largest version now operating in Pornainen holds 2,000 tons of soapstone, stores up to 100 megawatt-hours of energy, and has already cut the town's heating emissions by 70 percent. 🌍 No rare minerals, no toxic chemicals, no degradation over time. Energy harvested in July can literally warm your home in January. This is the future of seasonal energy storage.
