"A Book for Middle-earth fans; Peter’s Memoir is about a life, sharing the painful and regrettable, the delightful and inspiring. I find it admirable how Peter found an interest to follow, an interest which helped him overcome setbacks in life." Rod Macnee.

Should the third volume have been named, "War of the Ring"? On 17 August 1953, Tolkien writes to his friend and publisher Rayner Unwin on the names of the three volumes of The Lord of the Rings. The names chosen are "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King". And the rest is history!

Over some months did Tolkien and Unwin consider the names of the three volumes and the six books (the latter not used until the Millennium edition).

For the first volume, Tolkien suggested both "The Return of the Shadow" and "The Shadow Grows" before "The Fellowship of the Ring" was chosen.

For the second volume, "The Ring in the Shadow", "The Shadow and the Ring" and "The Shadow Lengthens" had all been considered before "The Two Towers" was chosen. It is unclear whether Tolkien or his publisher chose the name.

For the final volume, Tolkien preferred "The War of the Ring" as the title didn't reveal the ending of the story. But Tolkien was overruled by Unwin who chose "The Return of the King" instead.
