ANY JELLAT JELLAT PUBLIC STUDENTS AND TEACHERS OUT THERE?

As part of our celebrations we look back at the origins of our current building, the former Jellat Jellat Public School.

Built on land donated by the Russell family, the Jellat school operated from 1871 to 1974 and reopened in 1976 as the Bournda Field Studies Centre. In 1996 the buildings were moved into the new Bournda National Park (established 1992) and reopened as the Bournda Environmental Education Centre.

That's a fascinating and unusual journey for an old school building and the combined education era across the two sites has now passed the sesquicentenary!

The photos capture a few scenes relevant to that story and thank you to local historian Pat Raymond for the original plans of the current building dating back to 1921!

A TALE OF TWO TINNIES

On a glorious Saturday evening, on the beautiful Merimbula Boardwalk, was what looked like a family outing. Dad had a blue beer can in hand.

A short distance further along the boardwalk there was an empty blue beer can (same brand) discarded on the arm of a bench.

The next morning, just a few metres from where the family had been spotted the previous day, was a matching blue can in the bushes where it had been tossed.

Thought for the day?
Instead of tossing rubbish in a beautiful spot they could have put them in a bag and said to the kids, “Here’s 20 cents. Let’s keep an eye out for others and see if we can make a dollar!”

Wouldn’t that be a nicer tale? 😀

SING ALONG!

Big thanks to Cooma Public School for helping us out with the birthday celebrations! It was an uplifting moment which, along with social media restrictions, explains the camera angle! If we wheeled out a cake with candles there may have been even more energetic singing but we were happy that they did it willingly! :-)

50 YEARS OF TEACHER SUPPORT! 🥰 THANK YOU!

It is our 50th birthday today and throughout that period, the Centre has had amazing support from schools and teachers. Here is an excellent example from 1999! Bega West is no longer with us but we believe Mary is still teaching! We could literally do hundreds of these posts for every teacher that has supported us - without teacher support for environmental education there would be no EEC. Teacher support has always been based on an understanding that learning outdoors in natural environments is great for student wellbeing and physical and cognitive development!

Jack Miller, the inaugural Principal of the then Bournda Field Studies Centre (FSC now EEC), wrote in 1976:
“If the Field Studies Centre has a birthday, then it is probably 18 February 1976, the date on which the Jellat Jellat premises were first occupied as the Bournda F.S.C.”

We were going to have a party but there were a few clashes, and some key people were unavailable, so we have decided to postpone it until later in the year. Until then we will celebrate our 50th with regular posts of historical photos; if you are a teacher or student who participated in activities at Bournda, let us know your stories and help us name anyone you know in those early pics. Use the hashtag

The good news is that the work goes on! In this short video taken on Monday evening you can listen to Cooma Public School students "monitoring" nature and loving their Bournda camp experience! The CPS students worked out that the first Bournda campers of their age would now be about 61 years old and the oldest school students of that year would be approaching 70!

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians, the Djiringanj people for their leadership in Caring for Country over many thousands of years, of which 50 years is a mere blink of an eye!

Our thanks always go to the schools and teachers who support our programs to learn in the Great Outdoors!
We can't list all the schools that support us but thank you to everyone!

Thanks to our many supporters in all areas of the community! Too many to mention!
