REVERSE TRICK OR TREAT!

The Moora Youth in Emergency Services Cadets will be buzzing around town in the St John WA - Moora ambulances and Moora Volunteer Fire & Rescue appliances projectile dispensing candy.

Please let us know where you'd like us visit and we will plan our route accordingly, then listen out for the sirens from 5:30pm on Tuesday

Today began with a 5 hour, 15km beach hike to an historical WW2 site at North Head. Whilst the scenery was superb, the main goal was to develop resillience and grit. Through shared adversity, bonds are formed.

We then had a rotation of activities which were successfully planned and run by our Cadet Section Leaders. These activities were designed to develop teamwork and strategy.

Throughout the camp, cadets have been responsible for preparing all meals which they have planned themselves and all respective cleaning duties. This is designed to develop responsibility, independence and in many cases problem solving skills (they have been successful in this).

It is good to see the leadership and independence of many cadets flourish when given the opportunity, taking the initiative to do things rather than waiting to be told what to do.

When it comes to extinguishing fire, it helps to fully understand how fire works. What better way to understand fire than to try and light and sustain a fire in moderate to heavy rainfall.

Last week, our cadets were given a lighter (because we're not that mean) and tasked with building a fire they could cook on, despite everything around them being drenched. They were able to successfully cook some damper, potatoes and noodles.

This week, as part of the preparations and training for our coastal camp later in the term, the cadets engaged with the fundamentals of raft and shelter building.

Given simple materials, they had to apply their knowledge of appropriate knots and problem solve ways to make the final product functional. After this they were taught some other techbiques which they could have used to overcome the difficulties they faced.

Today, Noel Wark was layed to rest in Jurien Bay in what was one of the most telling displays of the power of Community Service and Community Spirit.

For Noel, who served for 68 years as Volunteer Fire Fighter in Harvey, Moora and Jurien Bay; the streets were lined and the procession of Emergency Service vehicles escorted Noel along his final ride on a fire appliance he grew up using to help protect our region.

There are few people in this world with such a profound community spirit which we so aspire to, and to see how widespread of an effect such a spirit can have is truly humbling.

Our cadets spent the last two weeks training with Moora VFRS, this included a plethora of skills including water delivery, BA Search patterns, use of fire blankets and the applications of hydraulic road crash rescue equipment.

We greatly appreciate the time volunteered by the members of Moora VFRS and look forward to continue to work with them in the future!
