We are Physical Chemists, specialising in the spectroscopy of ion-molecule clusters. Translation: We shine laser light at small things and blow them apart.

Congratulations to Hayden on a superb final PhD seminar.
Nearly there for Hayden Robinson ...
Preliminary reports are in for his PhD thesis, and it is recommended he continue on to his Viva!

A successful visit by Peter Watson and his students from Curtin today.
The Beast starting humming nicely!
And this was with the old General Valve nozzle, as we are still waiting on parts to repair the piezo nozzle.

It was great to have a visit by the Academic Son and Academic Grand Kiddies today!
Peter Watson and his three students Cosi, Hannah, and Neve came to ECU to see the machine, and to learn about molecular beams before jetting off for some beam time in the Netherlands next week.

After a thorough cleaning, the pump chambers of the YAG are shining bright!
Leak testing at the moment, and so far so good - no gushing river filling the laser base.

The Lasers have moved into place.
One problem - algae growth in the internal cooling water.

Piezo disc has died..
Time to make a new actuator assembly! If interested, check out this paper.

Luckily, I have a great couple of workshop technicians 20 metres away, who will assist me! (And I bought a bunch of piezo discs before leaving UWA!)

Made Bromide anions for a fleeting moment, until the nozzle started playing up.
Didn't have the time to take an image, so you'll just have to trust me.
Time to vent the chamber and investigate.
Here's the nozzle before I started, pulsing away happily. Not sure what went wrong (yet..).

So... Tomorrow, we start the search for ions at ECU.
Ion detector tested today, and running beautifully!
Piezo nozzle and electron pulser are... Pulsing!
All equipment in the new rack, plugged in, and connected.
