We feel incredibly privileged to be the inaugural recipients of the Stuart Thompson Perpetual Trophy, awarded to the Most Successful Exhibitor.

For those in the industry who knew Stuart, you’ll understand just how much this means. Stuart was one of the kindest and most helpful beekeepers you could meet. We got to know him through the Beaudesert Show Society, where he was Chief Steward of the Apiculture section for what seemed like forever.

Stuart was selfless with his time and incredibly generous with his knowledge. He gave so much to beekeeping and to those around him, and his passing last year was a great loss to our community.
To be the first recipients of an award carrying Stuart’s name is genuinely one of our proudest moments in beekeeping. It is an honour we will treasure.

A very special mention to 8 year old Archie, who took out Honey of the Show. His honey was absolutely stunning and a wonderful testament to the next generation of beekeepers coming through.

We think Stuart would have been pretty proud of that too.

And just like that, the 2026 Ekka has wrapped up, celebrating an incredible 150 years of bringing the country to the city! 🐝🍯

We had an absolute blast volunteering over several days at the Queensland Beekeepers' Association Inc Honey Court, celebrating Queensland’s beekeepers, our incredible honey bees, Australian honey and all things bees.

This year, education and awareness felt more important than ever. As our industry continues to navigate the devastating impacts of Varroa mite, helping the public understand what is happening to our bees and beekeepers is critical.
A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by, had a chat, watched a demonstration and asked so many brilliant questions. Your genuine interest, support and eagerness to learn about bees meant so much to us.

A very special thank you to Megan and Murray from Farmgate Honey, whose determination and hard work helped make this year’s Honey Court possible. And to the wonderful team of volunteers who gave their time, energy and passion to support the cause, thank you. Events like this simply do not happen without people willing to step up and give back to our industry.

The Ekka gives our industry an incredible opportunity to connect with the community, share knowledge and help people understand just how important healthy bees and a strong beekeeping industry are to Australian agriculture and our everyday lives.

The Ekka might be over for another year, but the conversation must continue.

Seems like all creatures great and small want to learn about bees! 🐝🐍🍯
We had a rather unexpected visitor to our honey studio this morning. This little python decided to pop in and see what all the buzz was about!
Clearly, our BEES In Schools program is attracting a much wider audience than we anticipated. 😂
Safe to say, this curious little student was gently relocated after their private lesson on bees and honey.

Spot on Danny! Australian Honey Bee Industry Council

It’s been an emergency for a long time. Beekeepers are battling Varroa mite every single day, trying to protect what bees they have left.

We often hear the argument that Australia doesn’t need honey bees and that our native bees can simply fill the role. Native bees are incredibly important to our ecosystem, but the reality is far more complicated. It’s often feral, unmanaged honey bee colonies that provide pollination in areas where commercial hives aren’t engaged.

Varroa has devastated many of those feral colonies, and we’re already seeing the potential consequences like blossoming fruit trees in large orchards can be left largely unpollinated.

Time will tell, and the argument will ultimately be answered by what we see happening in our orchards, our food supply and our environment. In the meantime, our food security is at risk, and this should be taken very seriously.

How can you help?

🐝 Please buy Australian Honey and support your local beekeeper.

🚫 Please avoid using poisonous sprays for w**d kill, and opt to use natural or safer alternatives such as vinegar, dish soaps, water and salt.

🐝 Day 2 at Mudgeeraba State Special School 🐝

Yesterday was our second and final day with the incredible staff and students at Mudgeeraba State Special School, and we can honestly say it was one of the most rewarding experiences.

The excitement, curiosity, knowledge and pure joy shown by the students was simply exhilarating. Seeing their faces light up as they explored the fascinating world of bees reminded us exactly why we love delivering our BEES In Schools program.

A huge thank you to the wonderful staff for welcoming us so warmly and supporting every student to get involved in their own way. And to the students, thank you for your enthusiasm, your fantastic questions and for making these two days so memorable. 🐝💛

There were plenty of smiles, plenty of learning and, of course, plenty of BUZZ! 🐝

And there is no slowing down for us...

Today we are back at the EKKA! 🎡🍯🐝

We will be helping out at the Queensland Beekeepers' Association Inc stand, talking all things bees, honey and beekeeping.
