At JCK, we are committed to embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into our everyday practice in authentic, respectful, and meaningful ways.
Over the past two terms, our children have engaged in our Counting to Country program, which has been thoughtfully developed and delivered by the wonderful Mrs M.
The children explored the significance of ochre and charcoal, learning where these natural materials come from, how they are traditionally used on Country, and their important role in storytelling and cultural practices. The children then used this knowledge and traditional Aboriginal methods to paint their own rock, using sticks as paintbrushes to paint with ochre and charcoal.
The Bush Tucker experience was another highlight. Children discovered native foods including Davidson's plum, lilly pilly, lemon myrtle, quandong, and old man saltbush while learning how Aboriginal Peoples have cared for and used these plants for thousands of years. They also explored native bugs, insects, and animals, developing an understanding of caring for and living with Country.
Mrs M prepared a delicious morning tea of freshly baked damper with quandong or lilly pilly jam, lemon myrtle butter, and refreshing lemon myrtle juice. It was an absolute taste sensation!
We are so grateful for opportunities like these that inspire curiosity, nurture respect, and help our children develop a genuine appreciation for the rich cultures, knowledge, and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
