A couple of months ago, Anna walked in with a goal: to build her confidence in public speaking. At our last meeting, she delivered her Icebreaker, her very first speech! 🎤

The Icebreaker is a significant step for anyone looking to grow their speaking confidence, and it's made a whole lot easier by a supportive room that helps get you there. Huge well done Anna, we're so proud of you! 👏

And the rest of the night? Very, very pink. 💗

💗 Theme: Pink! Pink shirts, pink accessories, Pink songs for Table Topics, and anything that rhymed with pink (you'd be surprised what does)
🧦 Our Toastmaster of the evening Julie Bavister kept things flowing beautifully... in pink socks, no less
🌿 Fred Fouad delivered his Level 3 inspirational speech and reminded us all that nature and beauty are necessary
📖 Word of the evening: significant. Fitting, given Anna's big step!

🏆 And a massive congratulations to local Toastmasters legend Maurie Mcguire, awarded his DTM (Distinguished Toastmaster), the highest achievement in Toastmasters! It's been a privilege watching your journey Maurie. 🎉

Last Wednesday was a night of Firsts, Awards, and Recognitions. But everything always starts with a first!

Thank you to all for a lovely evening. Our theme was “Challenge” and each one of us challenged themselves to push a little further.

Congrats to Dolores for stepping up as Toastmaster of the evening for the first time. A daunting task that was well handled. Congrats Dolores!

Our newest member Anna was officially inducted, and we are looking forward to seeing her amazing progress.

Our contestants for the upcoming Area Conference have also been confirmed! Congrats Fred and Paul! Look out for details of the Area Conference, coming in October.

Tips for Impromptu Speaking:

Someone turns to you and says "So, what do you think?"

And your brain goes completely blank. We've all been there.

Here are a few frameworks that give your brain something to grab onto when you've got no time to prepare:

🕐 Past, Present, Future. Where you were, where you are, where you're heading. Works for almost anything.
📌 P.R.E.P. Point, Reason, Example, Point. Perfect for meetings and job interviews.
⭐ S.T.A.R. Situation, Task, Action, Result. Interview gold.
⚖️ Pros and Cons. Define the issue, weigh both sides, land on a recommendation.
📖 Start with a story. Anecdote, then the lesson, then the call to action.
❓ What? So what? Now what? What you're saying, why it matters, what happens next.

At Toastmasters, we practise impromptu speaking in "Table Topics" where you are given a question, topic or phrase and are challenged to deliver a 1-2 minute impromptu speech, right there.

Our long time member, and past president Paul Arnell-Smith served as Test Speaker at Ipswich Toastmasters Club evaluation competition this wednesday past. A speach that had the audience captivated till the last second!

📢 There is a word for hiding in the corner and quietly hoping nobody calls your name…..

“Latibulate”

That was our “word of the night” on Wednesday, brought to us by Paul (Jed). It might just be the most Toastmastery word we have ever had!

Russell Bachmann took the reins as Toastmaster of the Evening and guided us through a big night with four great speeches, 4 evaluations and an Education session by Maurie Mcguire on the secrets to evaluation, and how the right feedback lifts a speaker rather than flattens them.

An amazing night with so much learning and development and watching people at different stages grow.

Our next meeting is Wednesday 9th September. Come along as a guest, see what it’s all about.
